4. Whisky is one of the most popular
spirit-based drink made from malted
or saccharified grains
It is a type of distilled alcohol
beverage
It consists 40% of alcohol
The word whisky means “water of
life”
it is also known as β-methyl γ-
octalactone
Whisky lactone is a flavouring found in
American bourbon whiskies and also
found in all types of oak
The flavour gets into whisky when its
matured in oak barrels
The pure molecule has a fierce
,strong & sweet smell & can be
dissolved in alcohol in any
proportion

5. OBJECTIVE:
In human body whisky plays a significant role such
as
. maintaince of healthy weight
. Reduces risk of cancer
. Minimizes the risk of cancer, dementia,
alzheimers disease
Above all functions, the study of chemistry of
whisky is very important, as it possess various
medicinal & therapeutic uses.
To develop some hidden medicinal and their
Purposes yet to be explore.

6. SYNTHESIS :
It is synthesied commercially from crotonic acid &
pentanal
It gives 3-methyl-4-oxooctanoic acid in a 66% yield
which was reduced by NaBH4 to give whisky lactone
in a 88% yield
Trans-3-methyl-4-nonanolide one of the component of
cognac, was prepared from crotonic acid & hexanal
C4 H6O2 or CH3-CH=CH-COOH + C5H10O → C9H16O2
“ELLAGIC ACID” is the main component of
whisky .which is responsible for anti-oxidant
activity. 6
7. EXPERIMENTAL :
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are a major cause
of cellular injury leading to pathogenesis of various
diseases including cancer
Ellagic acid was reported to reduce chemotherapy
induced toxicity in hormone refractory prostate
cancer (HRPC)
Anti -carcinogenic effect of ellagic acid have been
reported in prostate liver , colorectal esophageal
bladder and leukemia cancer cell lines.

8. MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It mainly acts on “ GABA’’ Channels.
Whisky shows “GABA” agonist activity. but
a “ GABA ”binding site { a place on the GABA
protein } called “ GIRKs ” (site for alcohol’s
action in brain) .
whisky has been shown to exhibit
“NMDA ” antagonist activity .
“WHISKEY”
antagonist agonist
NMDA GABA 8
