In The Company’s Sustainability

SSC White Paper
Engaging Employees in the
Company’s Sustainability

The benefits that come from greening
your business go beyond simply feeling
good, indeed tangible benefits result.
Greener behavior reduces costs associated
with energy consumption, waste disposal,
and paper use. Customers will also
respect a company with green initiatives.

The key to integrating sustainability into
your company’s bottom line is to get
everyone involved, especially employees.

Engaging Employees in the
Company’s Sustainability

 The Five Steps:

 1. Assess the organization’s
      awareness and impact
 2. Educate employees
 3. Create a sustainable strategy
 4. Set the plan in motion
 5. Review the company’s progress

Step One:
Assess Your Company’s Impact
Assess Your Company’s Impact

Before you can begin to plan a specific way to
green your business, you have to know both
your company's impact on the environment
 and level of environmental awareness.

                       www.sustainabilityconsulting.com

Assess Your Company’s Impact

 Measure Your Impact
     Calculate your carbon
        footprint
 Go even further and get a
        green audit
         SSC can help!
 A green audit can pinpoint
          where specifically your
          company is being wasteful

                              www.sustainabilityconsulting.com

Assess Your Company’s Impact

  Assess Your Employees
 A survey can reveal your employees level of awareness,
and interpret their attitude and actions.
 A survey also reveals groups existing within your
         company.
      Ask questions such as:
 Do you think your organization is addressing environmental
             impacts?
 Which activities have you participated in that can be
             considered green?
 For a full survey download Engaging Employees here!

Step Two:
Educate Employees
Educate Employees

Before creating a sustainability plan it is important to
make sure that employees understand the reasons behind
your company’s going green, or they may not feel the
need to jump onboard with a sustainability plan.

      Lectures
                                                                    methods. After all,
      Newsletters different people learn
      Memos in different ways.
      Statistics

      Multimedia Presentations

Educate Employees

  Present information that is:
      Relevant
      Dramatic and vivid
      Loss focused
      Credible

  Allow social diffusion

         should encourage green talk
         throughout the office

Step Three:
Building the Sustainability Plan
Building the Sustainability Plan

By looking back at your initial assessment of
the company’s impact, you can now begin to
gather employees who are interested in going
green and brainstorm ideas to do so.

Building the Sustainability Plan

 Take all employee suggestions
 and determine your company’s
goals. Then ask yourself if a goal
moves your company in the right
direction, if it is flexible, if it
 makes business sense, and if
there will be a quick return on
 investment.

Once you have a list of goals your
 company wants to pursue, you
can begin to create action steps to
 pursue said goal.

Building the Sustainability Plan

 Follow a Framework
Keep in mind that you want to
  incorporate the plan into your
        company’s vision.

                                                                                                  Review
                                                                                                 Feedback
                                                                         Involve All
                                                                                                and Revise
                                                 Create Employees
                                              Goal Limits (Even those
                          Make not on your
                        Deadlines green team!)

Step Four:
Put the Plan Into Action
Put the Plan into Action

Once your company enacts its sustainability plan, the
responsibility to accomplish many goals falls onto the
shoulders of the employees. Without a change in their
behavior, the plan will remain stagnant and no greening will
occur. But there are methods to keep the highest number
possible of employees engaged, lets explore!

Step Five:
Review Your Company’s Progress
Review Your Company’s Progress

The sustainability plan your company has now
implemented must be reviewed regularly to ensure it
being continually, if not increasingly, effective.

                                                knowledge and attitude as well

The Bottom Line
The Bottom Line

While a sustainability plan can only be enacted by those at the
top of the business ladder, its effectiveness lies in the
employees who chose to behave as ecofriendly individuals.
Thus, engaging every member of your business is essential in
 achieving sustainability.
