BEFORE AFTER
Customer: The Honourable Artillery Company
Project: External repairs and decorations Phase 1 and 2
Address: HAC, Armoury House, City Road, EC1
Bagnalls were asked to quote for the rear, and later
the front, façade decoration and restoration works to
the Honourable Artillery Company's (HAC) Armoury
House, in London. The works were in phases and
included the repair and redecoration to wooden doors
and window frames and restore parts of the building's
external features.
“The HAC is the oldest regiment in the British Army...
The Company traditionally traces its origins to 1537,
when Henry VIII granted a charter to the „Fraternity or
Guild of Artillery of Longbows, Crossbows and
Handguns.
The central portion of Armoury House was completed
in 1735 to designs by Thomas Stibbs and the east and west wings of Armoury House were built in
1828.” (source: www.hac.org.uk)
Armoury House is in regular use as a venue for functions and so Bagnalls needed to manage their
works to a tight deadline. This meant limiting the period in which the building was scaffolded and also
being flexible and understanding to the ongoing use of the building for both special events and day to
day operations.
The customer specified the installation of new leadwork along the
high level cornice (left) to match in with previously carried out
leadwork on other elevations. As well as being aesthetically
pleasing, this will also add protection to the weathered cornice that
sits on top of the
corbel.
The HAC‟s
Surveyor, kindly
remarked that;
“From the start I
was impressed with
their organisation of sub-contractors and the work carried
out was to a very high standard. The building was fully
operational throughout both contracts...These were my
first contracts with Bagnalls for over 30 years; they will
not be the last and we are already planning the next.”
