• Selected to serve on pilot study abroad program. Unique responsibilities included securing approved academic (6 weeks)
credit and collaborating with Xihua University to improve the program for future American student groups.
• Participated in intensive Chinese language and culture classes while building network of Chinese friends and
business acquaintances with whom I remain in contact and whom I assist in English language learning.
Qasid Arabic Institute, Amman, Jordan Summer 2013
• Studied 3rd and 4th semester Arabic at Jordan’s leading Arabic language learning center. (9 weeks)
• Creatively explored Jordanian culture by “couchsurfing” with Bedouin in the Arabian Desert, eating “iftar” with
Muslim families during the holy month of Ramadan, and navigating rented cars over many of Jordan’s exciting roads.
Leadership Experience
Vice President “Psalms” January 2013-May 2015
• Led the maturation and diversity of this college ministry. We grew from 4 to 80 in two years, and members included
graduate students, athletes, university staff, people affected by disability, and internationals from 3 continents.
• Counseled and encouraged students at any hour, helped mend broken relationships, and modeled vulnerability.
Vice President “The Big Event” at The University of Alabama, now “Hands on Tuscaloosa” August 2013-May 2014
• Led the development and rollout of the University’s largest one-day community service event by ensuring cooperation
among the 90-member volunteer planning staff and by managing long-term relationships with University personnel.
• Worked with the Student Government Association to secure annual funding for the event from the University.
Head Lifeguard Town of Erwin Parks and Recreation, Erwin, Tennessee May 2012-August 2012
• Overhauled health and safety protocols, resulting in zero non-weather closures and no serious injuries
to either patrons or lifeguards during the summer of 2012.
• Managed a team of twelve lifeguards to oversee all pool operations and conducted lifeguard in-service trainings.
• Regularly performed on-stand lifeguard functions along with management responsibilities.
