ScienceOpen: RethinkingPeer Review
The scholarlypublishingparadigmischanging –OpenAccess,altmetrics, data-miningare increasingly
settingnewstandards.A recentRoyal Societyconference on“The Future of ScholarlyScientific
Communication”calledinparticularforsweepingreformstothe currentsystemof peerreview.The
newplatformScienceOpen hastakenupthe challenge. Inordertoputthe evaluationof research
back inthe handsof researchers,we are experimentingwithnew formsof author-mediatedpre-
publicationpeerreview. Publishedarticlesare open fortransparentpost-publicationpeerreview and
versioningtoreflectfeedbackasthe scientificcommunity reads, workswith, attemptstoreproduce
and buildsonthe results. The essential effortsof peerreviewers inthisprocess are recognizedwitha
citable CrossRef DOI fortheirreport.ScienceOpen goesfurthertoextendthisopenresearch
evaluationprocessto over1.5 millionaggregated OpenAccesspublications. We are takingadvantage
of thistransitional momenttorethinkhow scientificcommunication,andparticularlypeerreview
couldfunction inthe future, because we believe thatscholarlypublishingisnotan endinitself, but
the beginningof adialogue tomove the whole scientificventureforward.
