Scientists put a twist on Social
Media
For researchers, clinicians, educators and students worldwide there is a new approach to search through
scientific publications, which currently number over 22 million and go back to the 1800’s. Sciencescape,
based out of Canada, aims to provide a universal, online, research delivery and exploration service.
Named as one of the Top 10 Innovations 2014 by TheScientist, Sciencescape streams thousands of
breaking scientific papers into a ‘Twitter’ like tool. This tool allows users to access data on currently
published scientific papers on over 50 million
categories.
Sam Molyneux, Co-Founder and CEO of
Sciencescape and his sister, Amy Molyneux,
Co-Founder and CTO of Sciencescape,
launched the first version to testers in the Fall
of 2012. In July of 2013, they launched a
public beta version. Sciencescape maps the
publications according to fields, topics,
institutes, authors, labs, places, and historical
sets that they are part of.
Eigenfactor Algorithm ModelThe academic research platform uses Eigenfactor algorithms to sort and
organize the research in real-time. This model borrows methods from network theory, to rank the
influence of journals, estimating the percentage of time that users spend on a particular journal. It also
takes into account the difference in prestige (impact factor) among citing journals and adjusts for
differences in citation patterns among disciplines.
SamMolyneux stated:
The platform uses a combination of natural language processing and machine learning on papers in the
cloud, both as they are published and historically, to create a research knowledge graph which, together
with a social media-like interface, enables researchers to subscribe to what interests them, share papers,
and access PDFs on the publisher’s website (to read or purchase).

2. Sciencescape Biomedical Publisher PartnersSciencescape has partnered with over twenty of the largest
biomedical publishers such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Karger. Their
most recent partnership with Elsevier will provide access to 11 million full-text articles. It updates
coverage of the biomedical sciences from sources like PubMed, WHO, Johns Hopkins and HUGO
amongst others. Sciencescape helps users in the academic research, education, healthcare, pharma,
government, publishing and libraries industries.
Sciencescape is a free service to all academics. For government and commercials users, the search and
exploration functions are free but they’ll have to pay for enriched functions like social sharing and
groups, including integrating it with their organization’s full-text subscriptions/licenses. Molyneux plans
to move into physics, chemistry, information science and social science. He also has plans for
Sciencescape Patents tool that will make patent documents more easily discoverable, enabling inventors
and others to subscribe and explore patents throughout history.
