How to use the COUNTIF and COUNTIFS formulas. COUNTIF formula counts how many cells from one column respect a pre-defined condition. COUNTIFS formula counts how many cells from one column respect multiple pre-defined conditions OR multiple columns respect one pre-defined condition.

1. Excel Tip: COUNTIF and COUNTIFS
Formula to count the number of cells in a range that meet a given criterion
= COUNTIF(range; criterion)
Range is the range of cells to analyse, Criterion is a number, date or expression
Formula to count multiple columns or multiple conditions
= COUNTIF(range1; criterion1; range2, criterion2,..., range_n, criterion_n)
The criteria can involve more than one column or multiple conditions in 1 column

= COUNT function counts the number of cells in a range containing numbers
= COUNTA function counts the number of nonblank cells in a range
= COUNTBLANK function counts the number of blank cells in a range
