REPORT 2014-15
1) VIDYUTH had a flat start in focusing on helping the students academically.
The first event “Demonstration of the integration of TMS420” was
conducted on 25th
July 2014 to meet the unspoken needs of 1st
year M-tech
Power Electronics students to help students to get prerequisite knowledge of
programming and implementation of TMS420. The event was headed by
Ishwarya Reddy (2nd
year M-Tech, Power Electronics) in the M-Tech
classrooms. The event was a big success as a self-help workshop in helping
the 50 participants academically.
2) On the track in helping students stand strong in enhancing technical skill-sets
VIDYUTH conducts its second event “MPLAB IDE” to assist the III year
students on MPLAB IDE. This software is a ground tool for all the IV year
projects performed using any control application. The goals of the workshop
were to help the students to have an idea on the functioning of the software,
learn the importance of the applications of a microcontroller in our day to day
life. The one day event was conducted on 12th
August, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm
in Krishna Hall. The sessions were handled by V. Sai Praveen, Kavya, Madan,
Balaji, Sneha, Srilekha (VII sem EEE). The feedback from the 50 participants
was positive and this motivated the forum members to conduct similar events
frequently.
3) On 21st
August 2014 VIDYUTH has taken its third step towards making the
students enjoy learning of basic electrical concepts. The one day event
“Technical Dhumsharaz” was organized to help the students in improving
their basics through a gaming session. The event includes acting out the
electrical term given to the team followed by a technical quiz. This session
was led by the secretary of VIDYUTH, Shubdheep, Office Bearer Ekaditya,
Chaitanya, Prince Gupta (V Sem EEE), in E-Learning Hall. The feedback
from the 53 participants was positive and all the participants were energized
with the concept of Fun Learning, which motivated VIDYUTH for its next
event.
4) “Technical Extempore” aimed to bring out the students on stage to speak.
30 students with fear of public speaking utilized this platform brought by
VIDYUTH to speak out. The event took place 19th
September in Rama hall
from 3:30-4:30. The event was organized and introduced by Spoorthi, Antara
and Ekaditya (V sem EEE). The event fixed technical topics on which the
students had to speak. Faculty coordinators for the event who marked and
judged the students are Ms. Kirthika Devi (Assistant professor EEE), Ms. K
Deepa (Assistant professor EEE) and Ms. Syama (Assistant professor EEE).
5) Inspired by the event conducted in the last academic year. VIDYUTH takes
an initiative to teach Basic Electrical Engineering concepts to the first year
students. “Know your basics” is a one day teaching session of EEE-100
course. It was made easy through a fun learning session with the EEE students
teaching the juniors. The event was coordinated and organized by Shubdheep,
Tejaswini, Chaitanya and Ekaditya (V sem EEE) on 23rd
September in the 1st
year classrooms. We received a positive feedback from all the 10 students
who attended these classes.
6) “Evolution of Embedded Systems in Digital Control” a seminar by Mr.
Hariram started in the early hours (8.30am to 9.30am) of 20th
September, 2014
in Krishna hall in the presence of our faculty members Ms. Mini Sujith, Ms.
Deepa K, Dr. Rashmi MR and Ms. Shailaja V. He provided the crowd with
valuable information and updates on the evolution of embedded systems in
digital control. The seminar was attended by M-Tech students (2013-15 batch)
from Power Electronics branch. The first phase of his presentation contained
his introduction, the different sections of electrical divisions under ABB and
some futuristic concepts in the electrical and electronics field. The concepts
of power grid and presumer in the field of solar energy were explained.
Students and teachers admired the fact that communication between two ends
within time to the range of microseconds, played a major role in electrical
systems as well. The latter half was on the various stages in the evolution of
embedded systems in digital control. The microprocessor is the basic model
students study during their course. This has been improvised through the
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA).
The speed of FPGA is faster than the former two.
7) Transportation Sector is the backbone of any country’s economy. The
effective movement of our country is carried by railways. Hence we took an
initiative to introduce traction and the scope for electrical engineers in the
field of traction. On 20th
September 2014 the event “Traction” took place in
(9:30am- 11:15am) Rama hall. The event was headed by Mr. Saravanan.B,
Senior R&D Engineer, ABB India Ltd, Bangalore. The event focused on the
importance of all kinds of engineers irrespective of branches for the traction
application. The event started with an introductory talk to describe what
traction is. Videos of fast bullet train operation were shown. The importance
of electrical engineers was proved describing the power electronic
components used in this application. The components included IGBT
(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor), SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) and
IGCT (Insulated Gate Commutated Thyristor).The main transportation and
communicating system can be developed by having more knowledge
regarding the traction and improvements can be made by implementing
innovative ideas. This essential knowledge helped to know the opportunities
for Power Electronics students in the field of transportation.
8) The seminar topic “Space Vector based PWM Techniques for voltage
source converters” was presented by Mr. Amit Kumar, Associate scientist,
ABB Ltd, Chennai, an alumnus of Amrita school of engineering, gold
medalist in 2010. He started with an introduction on the different algorithms
for the control of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. Space vector
based PWM methods benefits over the other methods and the application was
explained in detail, this would be very useful in future for the final year
students while implementing their projects. The questioning session and
personal interaction with him had lot of industry interface among the final
year B.Tech and M.Tech students. On the whole, this was a proud moment for
the faculty of the entire Electrical Department. The talk was organised in
Krishna Hall from 11.30am – 1.00pm on 20th
September 2014 for final year
B.Tech and M.Tech students.
9) On 22nd
September 2014 VIDYUTH introduces “Circuit Debugging” an
event to challenge students to solve and debug some of the challenging and
toughest electrical and electronic circuits. The event focused on analyzing the
simple circuits in logical way and to identify the mistakes in the complicated
circuits to solve them. The event was hosted by Tejaswini Vijay (V Sem EEE)
and coordinated by co-secretary of VIDYUTH, Spoorthi (V Sem EEE). The
event was a success with more than the expected participants with 75
contestants for the competition that filled the Rama Hall.
10) Industrial Visits:
I) Industry amends constantly. This is where the students were
activated, when they were taken for an Industrial Visit. To set the
gap between the industry and students VIDYUTH conducted an
“Industrial Visit to Schneider Electric” on for VII sem EEE and
2nd
year Power Electronics M-Tech students. Group of 54 students
and faculty Ms. Deepa and Mr. Shankar, visited Schneider Electric
in Electronic city on 4th
September 2014.The students were
explained about a Solar Inverter in the Galaxy Series of Inverters.
This is an inverter which would work only if it senses that the Grid
voltage is as rated and that there is no fault in the transmitted power
or when there is sufficient amount of sunlight to produce a DC
voltage within its operating range, else it remains dormant. When it
is operating, it synchronizes its output with the grid frequency and
feeds it. Overall, this was a highly informative Industrial visit, where
students learnt about the company as a global leader in its various
fields of specialization, various safety practices, a visual and
practical insight into the various power electronic devices used in
the products assembled, and their testing in the shopfloor of IDF –
8.
II) On 13th
October 2014 the IV sem EEE students got an opportunity
to visit one of the premier companies of India, BHEL along with
faculty member Mr. Shankar and Mrs. Shirisha. The team was
guided by Mr. Shiv Shankar (Engineer BHEL). In the industry
students were given an insight of what BHEL is all about and the
various projects that BHEL is under taken. BHEL covers power
generation, transmission, and distribution and utilization
equipment. The investments in R&D by the electrical industry are
amongst the largest in the corporate sector in India. Bharat Heavy
Electrical Ltd.(BHEL) is the largest manufacturer of boilers in the
country (with more than 60% share). The students concluded that it
was a whole some experience with lot of insight about various
activities that are carried in BHEL and how management is
effectively joining hands in order make things happen in time.
11) AAROHAN-14
VIDYUTH earns the credit of organizing gaming events for AAROHAN-14. The
events took a new face with the school students as the participants. Fun with gaming
and exciting prizes sponsored by the forum marked the events to be a success.
I) “Treasure Hunt” took place on 30th
of October. 270 students were
registered for the event and 54 teams consisting of 5 members were
formed. The event consisted of two levels and the level of difficulty and
complexity of the clues on hidden treasure increased by level. The event
was organized by Antara, Spoorthi, Ekaditya and Tejaswini (V Sem EEE).
The event was all about hunting for the treasure hidden in the campus. The
event comprised of exciting cash prizes for the school students that
attracted a huge crowd and made the event a grand success.
II) “FEFA” the mini football fever abbreviated as Fantastic Electrical
Football Amazement stood as the most exciting gaming event conducted
by VIDYUTH. The two day gaming session was on 30th
and 31st
of October
in Sudhamani hall. The game has 2 levels as any other football game,
Semi’s and Final’s.
III) “Glow me not” The event was organized by Sravani Setty (V Sem EEE)
and Harini (III Sem EEE). 120 people registered for the event in
Sudhamani hall. The event was all about passing a ring through a twisted
wire without touching wire and if it the wire was touched the LED glows,
indicating you are out. Each player was given 3 chances to move the key
from one end to another. The game required good concentration and
smartness. School students, teachers and college students irrespective of
age and experience tried out this tricky track by VIDYUTH.
IV) “Snakes and Frogs” snakes and ladders game is loved by everyone, a
similar game with an aptitude question was our moto. Out of the 90
students who registered for the game, all had to play in chances. All the
players has to solve a math puzzle to earn a chance to throw the electronic
die. The event was introduced and organized by Sailesh (V Sem EEE) and
Bhargav (III Sem EEE) that took place in Sudhamani hall on both the days
of the science fest. The game of luck and chance with exciting prizes was
enjoyed by all the players.
12) EKATVA-14
I) “Purely electrical” an electrical based technical quiz targeted to enlist the
brighter minds amongst the electrical engineers participating in the
competition. 38 students got registered in groups to take up this quiz. The
event was organized and hosted by M. Shireesha and Manohar (V Sem
EEE). The event consisted of 4 rounds. Round 1 comprised of technical
multiple choice questions, Round 2 of solving mode questions that were to
be cracked with the help inter-relation of electrical concepts of various
subjects, Round 3 (day two ) of a Technical Extempore and Round 4 of a
hands-on workshop for the making of a DC Exciter. All the rounds had
effective tie-breakers with elimination. The first 2 rounds on day one were
conducted in Vyasa hall .Top 5 teams reached the machines lab on day two
for the final war for the top 3 cash prizes.
II) “Fox Hunt” the same as treasure hunt but, to give a technical touch, the
treasure is replaced by a transmitter which has to be hunted with the help
of a receiver. The event was introduced and organized by Sailesh and
Sashidhar (V Sem EEE).The game had three levels. All the levels were
conducted on day one of Ekatva. In the first level, the teams were divided
into two pools and each group was given a series of clues to reach to the
final point. The teams which solve 5 clues, in the given pattern, in the
minimum amount of time compared to the other teams in their pool was
selected for the next level. The second level was played for the receiver,
which should be used to find the transmitter in the next level. The third
level was played for the transmitter which changes its position every
fifteen minutes. The transmitter should be found and get paired with the
correct password given in the clue. The team that paired first was
considered as the winner. The event got the maximum number of
participants with a huge number of 135 and was a big hit.
13) “Introduction to Power Electronics Simulation” an event conducted
by 2nd
year M-Tech Power Electronics students introduced MATLAB and
PSim to the VI Sem EEE students. The one day seminar was introduced and
organized by Ms. K. Deepa (Assistant professor EEE) on 21st
January 2015 in
Rama hall to introduce MATLAB Simulink tool for the power electronics
simulation. The aim was to teach MATLAB that would be a tool used in any
final year project. All the 53 participants who attended this session were given
small assignments in groups to get familiarized with the tool. The assignments
enabled self-help and learning with the help of M-Tech students.
14) “Know your labs” a workshop to help students perform well in labs took
place on 22nd
January 2015 from 3:30 to 4:30 in Rama hall. Problem arises in
lab circuits when the circuit does not work as expected or has to be debugged
to obtain the output. This needs the knowledge about the equipment and
electronic devices used in the labs. We aimed at helping the 20 students who
attended know their equipment and components well, that they use in the labs
for better conduction of the experiments through a one day seminar/workshop.
The workshop was organized by Sashwath, Savitha and Bhargav (IV Sem
EEE) with the support of Ekaditya and Divya (VI Sem EEE).

The goals of the workshop were to help the students to have an idea on the functioning of the software, learn the importance of the applications of a microcontroller in our day to day life. The one day event was conducted on 12th August, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm in Krishna Hall. The sessions were handled by V. Sai Praveen, Kavya, Madan, Balaji, Sneha, Srilekha (VII sem EEE). The feedback from the 50 participants was positive and this motivated the forum members to conduct similar events frequently. 3) On 21st August 2014 VIDYUTH has taken its third step towards making the students enjoy learning of basic electrical concepts. The one day event “Technical Dhumsharaz” was organized to help the students in improving their basics through a gaming session. The event includes acting out the electrical term given to the team followed by a technical quiz. This session was led by the secretary of VIDYUTH, Shubdheep, Office Bearer Ekaditya, Chaitanya, Prince Gupta (V Sem EEE), in E-Learning Hall. The feedback from the 53 participants was positive and all the participants were energized
  • 4. with the concept of Fun Learning, which motivated VIDYUTH for its next event. 4) “Technical Extempore” aimed to bring out the students on stage to speak. 30 students with fear of public speaking utilized this platform brought by VIDYUTH to speak out. The event took place 19th September in Rama hall from 3:30-4:30. The event was organized and introduced by Spoorthi, Antara and Ekaditya (V sem EEE). VIDYUTH takes an initiative to teach Basic Electrical Engineering concepts to the first year students. “Know your basics” is a one day teaching session of EEE-100 course. It was made easy through a fun learning session with the EEE students teaching the juniors. The event was coordinated and organized by Shubdheep,
  • 6. Tejaswini, Chaitanya and Ekaditya (V sem EEE) on 23rd September in the 1st year classrooms. We received a positive feedback from all the 10 students who attended these classes. 6) “Evolution of Embedded Systems in Digital Control” a seminar by Mr. Hariram started in the early hours (8.30am to 9.30am) of 20th September, 2014 in Krishna hall in the presence of our faculty members Ms. Mini Sujith, Ms. Deepa K, Dr. Rashmi MR and Ms. Shailaja V. He provided the crowd with valuable information and updates on the evolution of embedded systems in digital control. The seminar was attended by M-Tech students (2013-15 batch) from Power Electronics branch. The first phase of his presentation contained his introduction, the different sections of electrical divisions under ABB and some futuristic concepts in the electrical and electronics field. The concepts of power grid and presumer in the field of solar energy were explained. Students and teachers admired the fact that communication between two ends within time to the range of microseconds, played a major role in electrical systems as well. The latter half was on the various stages in the evolution of embedded systems in digital control. The microprocessor is the basic model students study during their course. This has been improvised through the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The speed of FPGA is faster than the former two.
  • 7. 7) Transportation Sector is the backbone of any country’s economy. The effective movement of our country is carried by railways. Hence we took an initiative to introduce traction and the scope for electrical engineers in the field of traction. On 20th September 2014 the event “Traction” took place in (9:30am- 11:15am) Rama hall. The event was headed by Mr. Saravanan.B, Senior R&D Engineer, ABB India Ltd, Bangalore. The event focused on the importance of all kinds of engineers irrespective of branches for the traction application. The event started with an introductory talk to describe what traction is. Videos of fast bullet train operation were shown. The importance of electrical engineers was proved describing the power electronic components used in this application. The components included IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor), SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) and IGCT (Insulated Gate Commutated Thyristor).The main transportation and communicating system can be developed by having more knowledge regarding the traction and improvements can be made by implementing innovative ideas. This essential knowledge helped to know the opportunities for Power Electronics students in the field of transportation. 8) The seminar topic “Space Vector based PWM Techniques for voltage source converters” was presented by Mr. Amit Kumar, Associate scientist, ABB Ltd, Chennai, an alumnus of Amrita school of engineering, gold medalist in 2010. He started with an introduction on the different algorithms for the control of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. Space vector based PWM methods benefits over the other methods and the application was explained in detail, this would be very useful in future for the final year students while implementing their projects. The questioning session and
  • 8. personal interaction with him had lot of industry interface among the final year B.Tech and M.Tech students. On the whole, this was a proud moment for the faculty of the entire Electrical Department. The talk was organised in Krishna Hall from 11.30am – 1.00pm on 20th September 2014 for final year B.Tech and M.Tech students. 9) On 22nd September 2014 VIDYUTH introduces “Circuit Debugging” an event to challenge students to solve and debug some of the challenging and toughest electrical and electronic circuits. The event focused on analyzing the simple circuits in logical way and to identify the mistakes in the complicated circuits to solve them. The event was hosted by Tejaswini Vijay (V Sem EEE) and coordinated by co-secretary of VIDYUTH, Spoorthi (V Sem EEE). The event was a success with more than the expected participants with 75 contestants for the competition that filled the Rama Hall.
  • 9. 10) Industrial Visits: I) Industry amends constantly. This is where the students were activated, when they were taken for an Industrial Visit. To set the gap between the industry and students VIDYUTH conducted an “Industrial Visit to Schneider Electric” on for VII sem EEE and 2nd year Power Electronics M-Tech students. Group of 54 students and faculty Ms. Deepa and Mr. Shankar, visited Schneider Electric in Electronic city on 4th September 2014.The students were explained about a Solar Inverter in the Galaxy Series of Inverters. This is an inverter which would work only if it senses that the Grid voltage is as rated and that there is no fault in the transmitted power or when there is sufficient amount of sunlight to produce a DC voltage within its operating range, else it remains dormant. When it is operating, it synchronizes its output with the grid frequency and feeds it. Overall, this was a highly informative Industrial visit, where students learnt about the company as a global leader in its various fields of specialization, various safety practices, a visual and practical insight into the various power electronic devices used in the products assembled, and their testing in the shopfloor of IDF – 8.
  • 10. II) On 13th October 2014 the IV sem EEE students got an opportunity to visit one of the premier companies of India, BHEL along with faculty member Mr. Shankar and Mrs. Shirisha. The team was guided by Mr. Shiv Shankar (Engineer BHEL). In the industry students were given an insight of what BHEL is all about and the various projects that BHEL is under taken. BHEL covers power generation, transmission, and distribution and utilization equipment. The investments in R&D by the electrical industry are amongst the largest in the corporate sector in India.   • 11. Electrical Ltd.(BHEL) is the largest manufacturer of boilers in the country (with more than 60% share). The students concluded that it was a whole some experience with lot of insight about various activities that are carried in BHEL and how management is effectively joining hands in order make things happen in time. 11) AAROHAN-14 VIDYUTH earns the credit of organizing gaming events for AAROHAN-14. The events took a new face with the school students as the participants. Fun with gaming and exciting prizes sponsored by the forum marked the events to be a success. I) “Treasure Hunt” took place on 30th of October. 270 students were registered for the event and 54 teams consisting of 5 members were formed. The event consisted of two levels and the level of difficulty and complexity of the clues on hidden treasure increased by level. The event was organized by Antara, Spoorthi, Ekaditya and Tejaswini (V Sem EEE). The event was all about hunting for the treasure hidden in the campus. The event comprised of exciting cash prizes for the school students that attracted a huge crowd and made the event a grand success. II) “FEFA” the mini football fever abbreviated as Fantastic Electrical Football Amazement stood as the most exciting gaming event conducted
  • 12. by VIDYUTH. The two day gaming session was on 30th and 31st of October in Sudhamani hall. The game has 2 levels as any other football game, Semi’s and Final’s. III) “Glow me not” The event was organized by Sravani Setty (V Sem EEE) and Harini (III Sem EEE). 120 people registered for the event in Sudhamani hall. The event was all about passing a ring through a twisted wire without touching wire and if it the wire was touched the LED glows, indicating you are out. Each player was given 3 chances to move the key from one end to another. The game required good concentration and smartness. School students, teachers and college students irrespective of age and experience tried out this tricky track by VIDYUTH. IV) “Snakes and Frogs” snakes and ladders game is loved by everyone, a similar game with an aptitude question was our moto. Out of the 90 students who registered for the game, all had to play in chances. All the players has to solve a math puzzle to earn a chance to throw the electronic die. The event was introduced and organized by Sailesh (V Sem EEE) and Bhargav (III Sem EEE) that took place in Sudhamani hall on both the days of the science fest. The game of luck and chance with exciting prizes was enjoyed by all the players. 12) EKATVA-14 I) “Purely electrical” an electrical based technical quiz targeted to enlist the brighter minds amongst the electrical engineers participating in the competition. 38 students got registered in groups to take up this quiz. The event was organized and hosted by M. Shireesha and Manohar (V Sem EEE). The event consisted of 4 rounds. Round 1 comprised of technical multiple choice questions, Round 2 of solving mode questions that were to be cracked with the help inter-relation of electrical concepts of various subjects, Round 3 (day two ) of a Technical Extempore and Round 4 of a hands-on workshop for the making of a DC Exciter. All the rounds had effective tie-breakers with elimination. The first 2 rounds on day one were conducted in Vyasa hall .Top 5 teams reached the machines lab on day two for the final war for the top 3 cash prizes.
  • 13. II) “Fox Hunt” the same as treasure hunt but, to give a technical touch, the treasure is replaced by a transmitter which has to be hunted with the help of a receiver. The event was introduced and organized by Sailesh and Sashidhar (V Sem EEE).The game had three levels. All the levels were conducted on day one of Ekatva. In the first level, the teams were divided into two pools and each group was given a series of clues to reach to the final point. The teams which solve 5 clues, in the given pattern, in the minimum amount of time compared to the other teams in their pool was selected for the next level. The second level was played for the receiver, which should be used to find the transmitter in the next level. The third level was played for the transmitter which changes its position every fifteen minutes. The transmitter should be found and get paired with the correct password given in the clue. The team that paired first was considered as the winner. The event got the maximum number of participants with a huge number of 135 and was a big hit. 13) “Introduction to Power Electronics Simulation” an event conducted by 2nd year M-Tech Power Electronics students introduced MATLAB and PSim to the VI Sem EEE students. The one day seminar was introduced and organized by Ms. K. Deepa (Assistant professor EEE) on 21st January 2015 in Rama hall to introduce MATLAB Simulink tool for the power electronics simulation. The aim was to teach MATLAB that would be a tool used in any final year project. All the 53 participants who attended this session were given small assignments in groups to get familiarized with the tool. The assignments enabled self-help and learning with the help of M-Tech students. 14) “Know your labs” a workshop to help students perform well in labs took place on 22nd January 2015 from 3:30 to 4:30 in Rama hall. Problem arises in lab circuits when the circuit does not work as expected or has to be debugged to obtain the output. This needs the knowledge about the equipment and electronic devices used in the labs. We aimed at helping the 20 students who attended know their equipment and components well, that they use in the labs for better conduction of the experiments through a one day seminar/workshop. The workshop was organized by Sashwath, Savitha and Bhargav (IV Sem EEE) with the support of Ekaditya and Divya (VI Sem EEE).
