Excitable and erratic - Bella is a tightly wound coil of motherly emotion.

In the words of her idols,
Callsinda is a definite
‘Wannabe’. Her life revolves
around her ambitious and
dreamy singing career – She
once played a part in the school
play and always wins the
karaoke competitions at the ‘Dog
and Bone’.
Spurred on by her parents she
now assumes stardom is just
around the corner.
Callsinda has one million
boyfriends, two million pairs of
shoes and three million different
phones.
Callsinda is every girl band. Whilst waiting for her
chance of fame she occupies herself with complicated
fashions and simple men.

He’s into his waster mates, his
blinging chains and his surgical
grade wit.
Dexter is always trying out new
zany ideas ideas at the stall,
often at the expense of a
customer or two.
A typical teenage boy, Dexter is travelling fast but going
nowhere.

Main Trait
•Smooth/ Panicky – Ivor is a cool guy,
but he often tries to be cooler and
smarter than he really is. Although he is
generally laid back, certain things can
get him stoked.
Sub Traits
•Excitement and boredom– Ivor is
easy going and relatively stable, he is
the emotional anchor of the Phonies.
Whenever the rest of the family are
running around screaming, Ivor provides
a calming influence. Occasionally though
his entrepreneurial side get the better of
him and causes Ivor to go all out for his
goals.
•Determined but Complacent – Ivor
is happy with himself and the world, but
he also feels the need to grow his market
business. The trouble is that he’ll never
quite follow any idea though to the finale.
Ivor is always first off the blocks and last
getting to the line.
Main Desire
By being true to himself, Ivor would love
to see his family and his business grow
bigger and stronger. He would love to
own the world’s biggest electrical gadget
market stall and still be everyone’s best
mate. He would love for Callsinda to be a
real Pop Star and Dexter to be a famous
footballer or a racing driver or anything. If
Ivor could get over his fear of change all
this could eventually happen.

13. Bella Phonie
Main Trait
•Hypermanic but sometimes carefree
– Bella is always concerned about
something. Is the Iron on? Is Dexter’s hair
in his eyes? Is it the moon causing her
water retention? The only time when Bella
is strangely content is when Dexter is
causing chaos in the market, or when she
brings home some special lingerie for Ivor..
Sub Traits
•Hope and despair – Is Bella herself the
root of all the problems? Maybe its
because she should love her family more?
Maybe she’s cooking too much red meat
for Ivor and causing him to be aggressive?
Bella easily gets ecstatically excited about
all things, but she also gets down too.
•Technologically Unaware but
Capable of Insight – Bella is the polar
opposite of Ivor in many ways. She hasn’t
a clue about ‘Nicam Stereo’ or ‘Digital
Broadband’ but when asked she can
provide some interesting insights, ie
‘Phones are good because people can’t
see you talking when you use them’. This
simple view is sometimes an eye-opener
for Ivor.
Main Desire
By being true to herself Bella would love
to be the perfect wife to Ivor and the
perfect mother to her children. Her own
mother died when Bella was young,
leaving the family feeling empty. Bella
recognises this and is trying to create the
perfect world for her husband and her
children. Unfortunately she ties too hard
sometimes and tends to crush the family
with her care. This side of her is naturally
balanced with her secret gambling
habits.

17. Callsinda Phonie
Main Trait
•Pretentious and humble – Callsinda firmly
believes she is a great performer, and she is.
Despite this she will still be happy doing karaoke at
the pub or dancing with a broom whist helping Ivor
clean his market stall. She aspires to be Victoria
Beckham one day and all the other girls in the
market aspire to be her.
Sub Traits
•Girl Power Feminist yet daddy’s little girl –
Callsinda pretends to be a strong follower of
women’s rights. She openly voices her opinion of
sexual equality for girls, and yet she’ll do anything
for the two men in her life, Ivor and Dexter). She’s
trying to be a strong independent woman and yet
she romanticizes about being swept of her feet and
cared for by a strong overpowering man.
•Airheaded and Particular – Callsinda looks like
a classical ‘bimbo’. She’s blonde, beautiful and
wants to be a Pop Star. Whilst this is true to an
extent, Callsinda uses this image to her advantage.
She is actually very capable and a good character
reader. Where she lacks the verbal spikes of Dexter,
she gains in the ability to manipulate and maneuver
others.
Main Desire
Callsinda needs to be famous.
She wants the lights, the
glamour, the fame and the
celebrity lifestyle. She’s slowly
getting there, either by dating 3rd
division footballers or entering
every talent competition Ivor
finds for her. Once she’s famous
she knows she’ll share the
money with the family.

20. Dexter Phonie
Main Trait
•Cocky but unsure – Dexter will be the first
to tell you what he’s thinking. He can be loud
and crass, with the immediacy of youth and
the voice of inexperience. But if he’s
confronted or questioned Dexter will easily
cower away and back down – something Ivor
knows well. Dexter enjoys hanging out at the
market and slyly making fun of people with
his friends.
Sub Traits
•Cool yet hates vanity– Dexter loves his
gold chains, his blinging fake Rolex and his
fat trainers. He works hard in the secrecy of
the bathroom to make sure he looks better
than all his mates and yet he’ll be the first to
laugh at another man trying to look cool.
Love and Hate – Dexter’s pranks and new
business initiatives often go very wrong. It is
usually Ivor who comes along and saves both
the day and Dexter’s pride. Dexter is often
embarrassed by this and resents the fact that
he still needs his family. This resentment
often appears as hate to the family.
Main Desire
Dexter’s main desire is to be better than
his dad. His loves working at the market
and hanging out with his friends. Deep
down all he wants is to be like his dad. If
the question was posed to Dexter, he
would probably reply he wants to be a
rapper, a gangster or the manager of his
football club.

22. Ringo Phonie
Background
Ringo was the first of a large litter. He
managed to separate himself from the
rest the day Ivor came to look for a
puppy. As Ivor reached over to look at
the squirming pups his phone fell from
his jacket pocket. Before it could hit
the ground this little pup jumped up
and grabbed the phone and began to
chew it. Ivor wasn’t able to separate
the two, so he brought them both
home!
Attitude
Ringo loves mobile phones. He always
buries Ivor’s in the garden, he always
licks Callsinda’s and he just barks
madly at Bella’s. And like all good
dogs, he obediently brings Dexter’s
ringing phone to him.
Main Desire
Ringo is a naturally intelligent and
inquisitive dog. Always energetic and
happy to see the family, Ringo will run
around the house- under tables and over
people as if to say, ‘hello’.
Just like Bella, Ringo is easily overcome
by excitement. On an interesting day
they can both be found running circles
around the lounge, hands and tails
waving in the air, screaming in
anticipation.
Dexter has taught Ringo well, and Ringo
sees him as his master. Only Dexter can
really control Ringo, although Ivor does
try.

Ivor’s Dad – Bill Phonie
Bill used to own a hardware shop after
the war. This outlet moved into selling
consumer electronics and attracted
many customers over the years, one of
which bought the entire shop!. Not only
did this American buy Bill’s shop, he
bought all the shops on the high street;
then a bulldozer and then a permit to
build a new shopping center. Bill did very
well from the deal though and split the
money between his children, Ivor and
Amanda. These days Bill tries to be pro-
active in the running of Ivor’s market
stall, something Ivor complains about.
Ivor’s Mum – Wendy Phonie
Ivor’s mum worked at Bletchley Park
during the war. She helped crack the
German codes and worked with their
huge computers. Now she lives with Bill
in a little retirement village. Wendy is still
very active on the internet and puts the
rest of the family to shame when it
comes to intellectual challenges.
Bella’s Dad – Bob
Bob worked at the old General Post
Office. He did quite well and worked his
way up the ladder, his only downfall was
his recommendation to the board that the
Telecom service will come to nothing.
Unfortunately Bob’s wife passed away
whilst Bella was a young girl. Although
this hit him hard at the time, Bob is now
quite the active pensioner, always with a
new lady on his arm.
Ivor’s Sister – Amanda
Ivor’s sister married Andy when she was
still young. She didn’t really know what to
do with her share of her father’s money
but Andy did. Amanda and Ivor are still
very close. Amanda is a happy
housewife, but spends most of her day
shopping in the mall.

Ivor’s Sister’s Husband – Andy
Andy used Amanda’s money to start his
own business. It’s similar to Ivor’s market
stall except Andy has aimed his business
at the more lucrative end of the electrical
market – He sells high tech mobile
phones from a shop inside the mall. Ivor
only owns a hard standing stall in the
market area. Although Amanda and
Andy are much better off financially, Ivor
is not bothered. He has his kids, he is
happy and, as he keeps reminding Andy,
he’s got a stool to sit on.
Bella’s Sister – Gabby
Gabby is married to a rich husband and
loves travelling around the world. The
only thing she loves more than travelling
is chatting with Bella for hours about her
journeys.
Joke Stall Owner
This is one of Ivor’s best mates. The joke
stall is just opposite Ivor’s. It also sells
costumes, magic tricks and saucy
underwear. The joke stall owner is one of
the most cynical, stoic and depressed
men you’ll ever meet.
Fish Stall Owner
Another one of Ivor’s mates, the fish shop
owner is a big burly chap. Needless to say
he stinks of fish but Ivor tolerates the
stench in exchange for his verbal
decoration on life. He’s a classic loud
mouth joker

Joke Shop Owner’s Son (Dexter’s
Mate)
Dexter’s partner in crime, this kid is a
true comedian and and indestructible
clown. Larger than life and afraid of
nothing. He really should be have his
own audience.
Café lady #1
Stereotypical school dinner lady. Fancies
Ivor and envious of Bella. She’s mean
but not lean.
Café lady #2
Stereotypical school dinner lady #2.
Center of the gossip. Nothing happens
without her knowing and if she knows
everybody else will soon.
Assistant Café lady
Callsinda’s best mate. A bit overweight
and a bit plainer than Callsinda. Admires
Callsinda for her beauty and talent.
The Shopping Centre Manager -
Donald
A happy rich American. He threw his
money into the Shopping Centre and he
made a return. Donald is a big man who
smokes bigger cigars. Although he acts
like he wears the crown, Ivor is the true
king of the Shopping Centre.
The Two Security Guards - Phil
and Dave
These two couldn’t catch a cold. They
dropped out of school and wouldn’t even
get into Police Academy. As thick as two
short planks they’re either asleep in the
CCTV room or falling prone to Dexter’s
latest prank.
Extra Characters
The shopping centre is full of them.
Lucky gypsies, teenage mothers,
Callsinda’s boyfriends. Any extra
characters can easily be brought in help
the story along.

Ivor Phonie
Ivor’s first waking thoughts are of the
market, his friends and the latest supply
of yesteryear’s gadgets. He is driven to
make the stall a success by his father-
his fathers business did far better than
Ivor’s stall is currently doing. He also
wants to show Andy a thing or two about
how to run a successful business -
Although he’d never admit this to
anyone’s face. Ivor has been ripped off a
couple of times in the past, losing money
to con men, dodgy deals and impulsive
stupidity. More than ever, he just want to
show everyone that he can run a
business, he can be a good friend to
everyone and Callsinda will one day be
famous.
Bella Phonie
Bella jumps out of bed each morning,
ready to fight each day’s challenges
head on. She’s always sure to have
some kind of breakfast ready before the
kids and Ivor get up. More often than not
she’ll have burned the toast and stewed
the tea. Still, she convinces herself that
she’s being the perfect mother. After the
family has risen Bella can’t wait to get to
the Market Café to start drinking coffee,
gossiping with the women and
complaining about the state of something
or other. Bella works as a catering
supplier to the market and a few other
shops. This leads her to the best inside
information and juicy gossip.

Callsinda Phonie
Callsinda’s main motivation is the
realization of her singing dream. She’s
aware it’s all Ivor and Bella desire. It is
because of all the effort and love that her
parents have put in that causes
Callsinda to carry on fighting the
mundane reality of ‘going nowhere’ and
believe in their dream of a Pop Star
Daughter. Callsinda works part time in
the Market at ‘Mustafa’s Shirts and
Shoes’ stall and she often gets a shift or
two at the Dog and Bone Pub. Callsinda
also studies Fashion Design at college
two nights a week.
Dexter Phonie
For a teenager, Dexter possesses a fair
bit of character motivation. The reasons
behind Dexter’s pranks, jokes and often
offending wit is so he can separate
himself from his father, Ivor. All
throughout his life he has been known
as, ‘Ivor’s Son’ and he is wanting to find
his own individuality and name. Dexter
has many friends who look up to him. He
is a bit of a cool kid in the Market and
likes the image he portrays

Ivor Phonie
•Ivor is a good father and husband. He
loves Bella despite her unpredictability
and moods. Ivor is always a stable and
calm figure. Little things about Bella
annoy him, like when she rearranges his
stall, or when she combs his hair.
•Ivor is very protective over Callsinda. He
still sees her as the little girl and as his
delicate first born. Even though he loves
her dearly, Ivor knows when to keep his
distance and when its best for Bella to
talk with her.
•Ivor is ready to give Dexter his own
space now. He realises Dexter is
growing up and looking for his niche as a
man, both in the world and in the family
unit. Although he is keeping some
distance from his son, Ivor still keeps
and eye on Dexter to make sure he’s not
in too much trouble and is always ready
to give him a helping kick.
Bella Phonie
•Bella is trying very much to be the
perfect wife. She sees Ivor as a solid
man with few real faults. Ivor’s a man
she can trust and someone who will
always look after her. Bella often feels
guilt after flipping her top and shouting at
Ivor for one of his little mistakes.
•Bella is the closest of all the family to
Callsinda. She is not only her mother but
also her best friend. Bella and Callsinda
love to sit down over coffee and chat
about all the boys in Callsinda’s life.
•Bella will always see Dexter as her little
boy in need of a plaster for his grazed
knee. She is always over concerned and
smothering in her feelings towards him,
but sometimes she’s disappointed in
herself for not making more of Dexter.

Dexter Phonie
For a teenager, Dexter possesses a fair
bit of motivation. The reasons behind
Dexter’s constant battery of pranks,
jokes and often offending wit is so he
can separate himself from his father,
Ivor. All throughout his life he has been
known as, ‘Ivor’s Son’ and he is now
wanting to find his own individuality and
name. Dexter has many friends who look
up to him. He is a bit of a cool kid in the
Market and likes the image he portrays.
The only two things which dent his image
are Ivor, who often comes to his rescue,
and Callsinda, who loves to pick on him.
Callsinda Phonie
•Callsinda sees Ivor in two ways. She
acknowledges him as the man he is, as
a great father and a good friend to many,
but she also shares her mothers view
that he is a still an excitable child in a
bigger body.
•Callsinda’s placental bond to her mother
has never been broken. Callsinda often
feels that somehow they are the same
girl, separated by time.
•Callsinda looks down on Dexter,
secretly considering him as a different
form of life. Although she recognises his
intelligence she revels in his confusion
and loves to pick on him and make fun of
him in front of his friends. She means
him no real harm though and has dried
his tears more than once.

•The Phonies have been designed to
support many stories and enhance any
mundane social event. Their differing
characters offer unique perspectives of
the same experience, I.e. Psychological
(Ivor), Emotional (Bella), Political
(Callsinda) and Comical (Dexter). This
ensures any situation the Phonies find
themselves in will lead to an interesting
dynamic.
•The depth of the Phonies’ characters
and their backgrounds are not obvious to
the audience. Each separate narrative
will be used to reveal a bit more of a
particular character. A persons’ true
character is defined by the choices they
make under pressure. The pressure in a
Phonies narrative will come from the
structure created by their confined
lifestyle in the Shopping Center and from
each characters unique contradictions
and perceptions.
•The aim of any initial narrative is to
introduce and expand the characters to
the audience. This can be done by
slowly exploring each character’s main
desires. With the combination of three
dimensions per main character and with
four main characters the first series of
the Phonies could easily produce 12 very
different episodes.
•The supporting characters have been
carefully designed to cause conflict with
the main characters. Andy and Ivor, for
instance, are natural enemies and follow
different life values, whilst Bella’s sister
Amanda represents the free life Bella
never had.

General Environment
The Phonies live in a generic middle-
England town. The Shopping Centre
could be in any of the ex-mining towns
based in the Midlands. Ivor and Andy’s
houses are situated on the edge of a
new housing estate, part of a sprawling
urban environment built up around the
new Town Centre. Ivor owns one of the
older semi-detached houses in this
estate. Andy, however, is still paying the
mortgage on his brand new detached
home. On the other side of the town lies
the retirement village where Ivor and
Amanda’s parents live, the only strange
thing about this is the huge mobile
phone aerial erected there and the
unnaturally energetic residents..
It is envisaged that the majority of the
Phonies episodes will take place in the
Shopping Centre. This is a huge covered
area which combines the American style
shopping mall with the old English style
market. There are plenty of these around
the country and they’re immediately
familiar to most.
The Shopping Centre style provides a
useful contrast between the different
generations and aspirations of people in
this country.

38. Locations
The Phonies Home - Kitchen
This is generally where the Phonies’ day
starts. A typical kitchen with a typical
table of boiled eggs, burnt toast and
recharging mobile phones.
This kitchen has every culinary gadget
ever made available- onion slicer’s, egg
breakers, soup knives, Ivor’s got them
all. Events in the kitchen usually revolve
around breakfast, tea and the extended
family Sunday lunch.
The Phonies Home - Lounge
Despite selling modern domestic
appliances Ivor still keeps his old
television. This ancient wooden box
takes a two minutes and three good hits
to get started. Once warmed up it heats
the whole house. Plugged into the back
of this monstrosity is a 600 channel
satellite dish Joderell Bank would be
pleased with. Ivor won’t say where the
dish came from, but most of the
channels above 500 seem to show
different views inside Buckingham
Palace. The lounge is the place where
Ivor shouts at the failings of ‘Robot
Wars’, where Bella and Callsinda laugh
at the pathetic attempts of boyfriends
and where Dexter sniggers at the
constant beeping of text messages whilst
rechecking Ivor’s lottery numbers.

40. Locations
The Market - Ivor’s Stall
The market is a recently constructed
building. It is an attempt by the local
council to rejuvenate the Town Centre by
combining the modern high street and
Market into one covered mall. All the
stalls in the Market area are hard
standing, glass fronted mini-shops. Ivor’s
stall is one of the biggest and consists of
a couple of large display windows and a
long glass counter.
The display windows are crammed with
ancient gadgets, their boxes faded by
dust and time. Beneath the glass counter
Ivor keeps his latest gadgets, such
things as spinning kaleidoscopic lights,
flashing mobile phone aerials and even a
few top of the range phones. Ivor can
normally be found leaning over the
counter, chewing the cud with his mates
and explaining the advantages of
SCART cables to the elderly.

The Market - Café
The Café provides the second meeting
place for the Phonie’s family. It consists

The Dog And Bone (The Pub)
This is the local pub, situated on the
outside wall of the new Shopping Centre.
It sells fizzy beer in two colours, fizzy
pop in two colours and alcho-pops in
every other colour.
The pub is a lovely place to be, and the
Phonies have spent many a Sunday
here answering the quizzes, singing
karaoke and shouting into their mobile
phones. Ivor usually ends up at the pub
whenever he takes Ringo for a walk.
The Shopping Centre - Andy’s
Shop(Swanky Phones)
The shopping center is divided into two
distinct parts, the Market and the Mall.
The Mall is more spacious and contains
many of the more lucrative brand shops.
Andy’s Phone shop is here. It is a
modern designed open planned shop
with a carpeted floor and pine display
units. The latest in mobile phones are
housed behind custom glass cabinets
and the measuring stare of Andy - the
suited manager.
The Shopping Centre – The
Lingerie Shop
This is the place where Bella works part
time. It’s a typical and upmarket shop
specialising in all types of bra’s, panties
and other nightime garments.
Bella does not own the shop, but the
Italian owner is never around, leaving
Bella to gossip as much as can.

be conglomerations and refinements

A comic strip is an ideal way to ease the
characters into the world. A comic strip
would introduce the characters and their

Released on a bi-monthly schedule, the
comic books would appeal directly to the
pre-teen market.
Scripts
Taken from the animated cartoon
series, the scripts could be made
available in print.
Posters
Giant A0 posters are an excellent way
for fans to show their friends about the
Phonies.
Multimedia
Both video games and virtual
words could be made for the
Phonies. Episodic content could
also be released via the web
Videos
A Cartoon Series can be
produced, detailing the Phonies
fun.
An ‘Exercise with Bella’ video
could be made where Bella
reveals the secret of her youth!
