This document discusses the ozone layer and ozone layer depletion. It begins by explaining that the ozone layer is a region in the stratosphere that absorbs UV radiation from the sun. It was discovered in 1913 by French physicists. The ozone layer is composed of 3 oxygen atoms and absorbs 97-99% of medium-frequency UV light. It is located 15-35 km above the Earth. The document then discusses what causes ozone layer depletion, noting that CFCs released chemicals that react with ozone and break it down. Finally, it outlines the human health and environmental effects of ozone layer depletion, such as increased skin cancer and effects on plant growth.

THE
SHEILD OF
EARTH
• The ozone layer or ozone shield is a
region of Earth's stratosphere that
absorbs most of
the Sun's ultraviolet radiation.

physicists Charles
Fabry and Henri
Buisson
5. Ozone
The ozone layer absorbs around 97-99% of the
medium-frequency ultraviolet light emitted by the
sun. The ozone layer is composed of 3 atoms of
oxygen and is represented as O3.
6. • The ozone layer is mainly found
in the lower portion of the
stratosphere, from
approximately 15 to 35
kilometers (9 to 22 mi) above
Earth, although its thickness
varies seasonally and
geographically

8. What is Ozone
Layer Depletion?
• Ozone layer depletion is the
thinning of the ozone layer
present in the upper atmosphere.
This happens when the chlorine
and bromine atoms in the
atmosphere come in contact with
ozone and destroy the ozone
molecules. One chlorine can
destroy 100,000 molecules of
ozone. It is destroyed more
quickly than it is created
9. The ozone layer depletion came to the
public eye after the creation of a chemical
compound known as chlorofluorocarbons
or CFCs (formerly used in refrigerators,
aerosols, and air conditioners). It was
discovered in the 1970s. These were used
as refrigerants, aerosol spray propellants
etc. CFCs are light and can move up in the
air and reach the stratosphere. Here the
chlorofluorocarbons react with the ozone
layer in the presence of ultraviolet
radiation and cause it to break down into
oxygen molecules. The result is the
depletion of the Ozone Layer.

11. What will
happen if
ozone
layer got
depleted ?
☯ Effects on Human Health-----
Humans will be directly exposed
to the harmful ultraviolet
radiation of the sun due to the
depletion of the ozone layer.
This might result in serious
health issues among humans,
such as skin diseases, cancer,
sunburns, cataract, quick
ageing and weak immune
system.
12. • ☯ Effects on the
Environment-------
Strong ultraviolet rays
may lead to
minimal growth,
flowering and
photosynthesis
in plants. The forests
also have
to bare the harmful
effects of the
ultraviolet rays.
