“You can see our work
everywhere you look”
Tell us about your career at SPIE
Coen Roberts: At the end of my degree course, I did a 6-month internship at SPIE Infra. SPIE
offered me a permanent job in July 2012 as a Project coordinator, a wide-ranging role involving
planning, logistics and dealing with the suppliers. Then in January 2016, I became a Project
leader. I’m responsible for a number of high-voltage infrastructure contracts, with budgets
of around €2 million.
What makes SPIE a good company for young graduates?
C.R.: It’s very challenging technically and no two days are ever the same. It’s very satisfying
to see the results of your work all around you, wherever you go – we really do work for the
public. Another good thing about SPIE Nederland is the open atmosphere. It’s easy to talk to
the management, you don’t need to book any appointment. Although the style’s very relaxed,
we all take our responsibilities very seriously.
What does SPIE do for young people once they have joined?
C.R.: We have an internal organisation called Young SPIE, which is for people below the age
of 36. We hold both professional and social events that help the younger people to get to
know each other better and identify with the company. I’m one of a small group of organisers
– I devote a lot of my evenings and week-ends to it!
