extracurricular activities according to their year group.
• Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features. Make
comparisons where relevant.

Tips to Answer: Structure
Paragraph 1:
Start by introducing the table – what is the general theme?
Paragraph 2 and 3:
Discuss the key features you can see. Write two paragraphs; one to
discuss activities with high participation rates and one to discuss activities
with low participation rates. Make comparisons where relevant.
Paragraph 4:
Finally, summarise the information – what can we conclude from this
table?
REMEMBER:
Analyse the table efficiently by looking at the rows (across) and the
columns (down) and noting any particularly high or low numbers.

Tips to Answer: Vocabulary
Useful Phrases Example
To be higher/lower
than…
The number of Year 10 students that attended
linguistic courses was significantly higher/lower
than dance or theatre activities.
To take part (in)… Almost a third of Year 11 students took part in
extracurricular sports activities.
To observe (that)… One can observe (that there is) a significant
difference in interest in sports activities
between Year 9 and Year 10 students.
REMEMBER:
The bar graph, line graph and pie chart questions all test your ability to
compare and contrast information. Refer to these classes for other useful
vocabulary.
