You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
• The graph below shows the number of male and female applicants to different
university degree subjects in the year 2010.
• Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

Tips to Answer: Structure
Paragraph 1:
Start by introducing the graph – what is the general theme?
Paragraph 2 and 3:
Next, discuss the key features you can see. Write two paragraphs; one for
each category - what are the most and least popular subjects by gender?
What comparisons can you make between the two categories?
Paragraph 4:
Finally, summarise the information – what are the overall statistics for each
subject?
REMEMBER:
Try not to repeat yourself; you can use the same words but try to put them in
a different order each time.

Tips to Answer: Vocabulary
Useful Phrases Example
To receive…. The department received many applications for
science studies.
To apply (for/to)… Few students applied for arts-related subjects.
Many students applied to the political science
department.
Significantly more/less than… There were significantly more applications for
scientific subjects.
In contrast…. In contrast to History of Art, there were few
applications for Physics.
REMEMBER:
Bar graphs may show the rise and fall in a trend, like a line graph. Establish
whether the graph shows a change over time before you start your answer.
