▪ Owned a steel mill in
Homestead, PA, near
Pittsburgh

3. LABOR UNIONS
▪ Union – organization of workers
to create better conditions,
higher pay, etc. . .
▪ Strikes – refusal to work. This
tool was often used by unions to
force improvements
▪ Union at the steel mill was the
Amalgamated Association,
(AA) formed and won a couple
of early strikes.

4. HENRY FRICK
▪ Carnegie’s partner and
manager of the Homestead
Mill
▪ He is determined to “break”
the union
▪ When unions contract is up
he refuses to re-negotiate
(1892)
▪ Workers are locked out and
strike begins

5. PINKERTON DETECTIVES
▪ Famous group of “hired
guns”
▪ Frick pays them to
provide security and
break the strike

6. CONFLICT
▪ When Pinkerton’s try to
enter the mill at Homestead
there is conflict
▪ Standoff last for 14 hours
▪ 16 people are dead as a
result!

7. RESULTS
▪ The strike lasts for four
more months
▪ The union finally gives
in
▪ Frick has successfully
broken the union
