Cause and Effect
Paragraphs
What is the Purpose?
• To discuss the reasons why something
occurs (Cause Paragraph).
• To discuss the results of an event, feeling
or action (Effect Paragraph).
Knowing how to write a good Cause or Effect
paragraph is important – most classes, history,
biology, journalism, marketing, for example, use
this technique to analyze things.
Organizing Paragraphs with the
MEAL Plan
• Well-organized paragraphs guide readers
logically through an essay’s development,
adding to the effectiveness of the argument and
the credibility of the writer.
• Paragraphs vary in length and structure based
on context, but they should focus on only one
idea.
• The MEAL Plan is an easy, effective strategy to
help you organize paragraphs.

Main Idea
• All paragraphs should have only one main idea or point which is
expressed in a topic sentence—a sort of mini-thesis statement for
the paragraph.
• Often, a topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph,
though it may come after or within a transition statement.
• If you have trouble identifying the main idea of a paragraph, try
writing “This paragraph is about…” and then finish the sentence.
• You can cross out the phrase and revise the rest into a clear, strong
topic sentence:
– This paragraph is about why Steelman is a better superhero than Green Muscle.
– This paragraph is about Why is Steelman a better superhero than Green
Muscle?
– Steelman’s ingenuity makes him a better superhero than Green Muscle because
this quality allows him to reason and make decisions based on his intellectual
abilities.
Evidence/Explanation/Examples
• Elaborate on the main idea by including one or more of
these “E”s (Make sure to cite outside information):
– Evidence—What does the main idea of the paragraph need to
support it? Do not place a quotation alone as a sentence. Be
sure to give some context that explains to the reader how/where
the quotation fits into the story.
– Explanation—Do you need to explain key terms, concepts, or
events? What information in the paragraph may be especially
complex or unclear?
– Examples—Other main ideas are best suited to examples, either
from personal experience or research, to illustrate or highlight
elements of the main idea.
Analysis
• Once the main idea has been stated and supported, it is
time to break that information down and analyze it.
• What more do your readers need to understand about
the evidence or examples you provided?
• How can you make it clear that you are interpreting this
information in a certain way?
• Always follow a quote with your analysis of the quote,
demonstrating how that quote helps make your case.
• In other words, this is the section of the paragraph where
the HOW? WHY? or WHO CARES? of your evidence is
explained.
Link to a Larger Claim
• Linking refers to the link between a paragraph and the paper’s
thesis.
• Ask yourself how does this paragraph contribute to the overall
effectiveness of the paper?
• You may not end up including that answer as part of the paragraph,
but you must make sure you have made the connection clear.
• Too often writers assume readers automatically will recognize the
link on their own, but your job as a writer is to make it impossible for
a reader to miss how each paragraph supports your overall goal for
the paper. Think about this connection to your thesis as a way to
develop a smooth transition to the next paragraph.
Additional Tips for Effective
Paragraphs
Unity
– The entire paragraph should focus on one idea, so it should not
wander between different ideas or end with another idea.
– When you finish writing a paragraph, read through it again and
make sure that every single sentence has something to do with
the main idea.
– If it doesn’t, the sentence doesn’t belong in that paragraph. You
may need to start another paragraph, move that piece of
information elsewhere in your paper, or delete the information
because it may not be relevant to your paper.

Start with your issue and look to the past.
Sample Cause Paragraph
Headaches
Headaches (Main Point) can have several causes (Controlling
Idea). One obvious cause is stress (Example 1). People have
hectic lives and frequently have multiple stressors everyday, like
work, family and money (Analysis 1). Another reason for
headaches in some people has to do with diet (Example 2).
Some get headaches because they are dependent on
caffeine. Other people may be allergic to salt, or they may have
low blood sugar (Analysis 2). The environment can also
cause this uncomfortable condition (Example 3). Allergens
such as household chemicals including polishes, waxes, bug
killers, and paint can lead to headaches (Analysis 3). Lowering
stress, controlling your diet and avoiding allergens can help
avoid headaches (Link).

Sample Effect Paragraph
Headaches
Recurring headaches (Main Point) can have initiate disruptive
effects in a person's life (Controlling Idea). Initially, in many cases,
these headaches make a person nauseous to the point that he or
she must go to bed (Immediate Effect 1). Furthermore, sleep is
often interrupted because of the pain. Disrupted sleep worsens the
physical and emotional state of the sufferer (Further Effect). For
those who try to maintain a normal lifestyle, drugs are often relied
on to get through the day. Such drugs, of course, can lead to other
negative effects. Drugs can inhibit productivity on a job, perhaps
even causing regular absences (Long Term Effect 1). Not only is
work affected, but the seemingly unpredictable occurrence of these
headaches leads to disruption in family life. The interruption to a
person's family life is enormous: cancelling plans in the last minute
and straining relationships with friends and family (Long Term Effect
2). It is no wonder that many of these people feel discouraged and
even depressed due to the cycle of misery reoccurring headaches
cause (Link).

How to Write a Paragraph

  • 2. What is the Purpose? • To discuss the reasons why something occurs (Cause Paragraph). • To discuss the results of an event, feeling or action (Effect Paragraph). Knowing how to write a good Cause or Effect paragraph is important – most classes, history, biology, journalism, marketing, for example, use this technique to analyze things.
  • 3. Organizing Paragraphs with the MEAL Plan • Well-organized paragraphs guide readers logically through an essay’s development, adding to the effectiveness of the argument and the credibility of the writer. • Paragraphs vary in length and structure based on context, but they should focus on only one idea. • The MEAL Plan is an easy, effective strategy to help you organize paragraphs.   • 4. Main Idea • All paragraphs should have only one main idea or point which is expressed in a topic sentence—a sort of mini-thesis statement for the paragraph. • Often, a topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph, though it may come after or within a transition statement. • If you have trouble identifying the main idea of a paragraph, try writing “This paragraph is about…” and then finish the sentence. • You can cross out the phrase and revise the rest into a clear, strong topic sentence: – This paragraph is about why Steelman is a better superhero than Green Muscle. – This paragraph is about Why is Steelman a better superhero than Green Muscle? – Steelman’s ingenuity makes him a better superhero than Green Muscle because this quality allows him to reason and make decisions based on his intellectual abilities.

Evidence/Explanation/Examples • Elaborate on the main idea by including one or more of these “E”s (Make sure to cite outside information): – Evidence—What does the main idea of the paragraph need to support it? Do not place a quotation alone as a sentence. Be sure to give some context that explains to the reader how/where the quotation fits into the story. – Explanation—Do you need to explain key terms, concepts, or events? What information in the paragraph may be especially complex or unclear? – Examples—Other main ideas are best suited to examples, either from personal experience or research, to illustrate or highlight elements of the main idea.
  • 6. Analysis • Once the main idea has been stated and supported, it is time to break that information down and analyze it. • What more do your readers need to understand about the evidence or examples you provided? • How can you make it clear that you are interpreting this information in a certain way? • Always follow a quote with your analysis of the quote, demonstrating how that quote helps make your case. • In other words, this is the section of the paragraph where the HOW? WHY? or WHO CARES? of your evidence is explained.
  • 7. Link to a Larger Claim • Linking refers to the link between a paragraph and the paper’s thesis. • Ask yourself how does this paragraph contribute to the overall effectiveness of the paper? • You may not end up including that answer as part of the paragraph, but you must make sure you have made the connection clear. • Too often writers assume readers automatically will recognize the link on their own, but your job as a writer is to make it impossible for a reader to miss how each paragraph supports your overall goal for the paper. Think about this connection to your thesis as a way to develop a smooth transition to the next paragraph.

Additional Tips for Effective Paragraphs Unity – The entire paragraph should focus on one idea, so it should not wander between different ideas or end with another idea. – When you finish writing a paragraph, read through it again and make sure that every single sentence has something to do with the main idea. – If it doesn’t, the sentence doesn’t belong in that paragraph. You may need to start another paragraph, move that piece of information elsewhere in your paper, or delete the information because it may not be relevant to your paper.

People have hectic lives and frequently have multiple stressors everyday, like work, family and money (Analysis 1). Another reason for headaches in some people has to do with diet (Example 2). Some get headaches because they are dependent on caffeine. Other people may be allergic to salt, or they may have low blood sugar (Analysis 2). The environment can also cause this uncomfortable condition (Example 3). Allergens such as household chemicals including polishes, waxes, bug killers, and paint can lead to headaches (Analysis 3). Lowering stress, controlling your diet and avoiding allergens can help avoid headaches (Link).
