Simon participated in a 10-week expedition with Raleigh International in Borneo, Malaysia. The expedition involved over 60 participants from several countries working on various community and environmental projects. Simon helped build a suspension bridge and assisted with research in Danum Valley for phase 1. In phase 2, Simon helped build a dam and water system for a village lacking water. Phase 3 involved a 17-day trek in Crocker Range to work on leadership, teamwork, and survival skills. The expedition provided an enriching experience working with different cultures on meaningful projects.
2. My 10 weeks with Raleigh Borneo
• The expedition (Raleigh Expedition 17A) consisted of over 60
venturers and 15 volunteering managers with participants from the
UK, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany and Malaysia
• Projects were conducted in Danum Valley, Kampung Kemburaon
and Kampung Kinangkaban around the Kota Belud and Kota
Marudu areas in Sabah
• A truly life enriching experience, living the simple life with local
villagers, working with people from different cultures.
3. What were my projects for the 10-Weeks?
• Phase 1 (Environmental) in Danum Valley.
• Phase 2 (Community) in Kampung Kemburaon.
• Phase 3 (Trek/Adventure) in Crocker Range.
4. Phase 1 - Environmental Project In Danum Valley
• The objective of the project was the construction of a suspension bridge
providing an alternate pathway to new nature trail, a camera trapping project
to observe and monitor the wildlife in the conservation area as well as
assisted a PhD student with his research on the Bird’s Nest Fern Plant.
• My team of 9 venturers (Alpha 3) were based at Danum Valley for 19 days
working on the various projects
5. Phase 2 - Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
project in Kampung Kemburaon
• Kampung Kemburaon is a village with 150 inhabitants situated off Kota Belud,
Sabah. I was part of Alpha 2 team of 12 venturers
• In the past year, Kampung Kemburaon faced many droughts causing a shortage
of water supply. Our project was to build a dam (gravity water feeding system),
lay more water pipes and build a communal toilet for the villagers and educate
the locals about water sanitation and hygiene.
6. Phase 3 - Adventure/Trekking in Crocker Range
• My team (Alpha 5) of 14 venturers, 3 managers and 4 guides spent 17
days trekking through Crocker Range in the Sabahan rainforest.
Throughout our time on trek, we worked on our leadership skills, team
work, decision making and survival skills.
8. • Thank you for support and for helping me exceed my targeted funding for
my 10-Week expedition with Raleigh Borneo!
• Excess from the funds raised were used to sponsor a fellow venturer and
the remaining donated to Raleigh International Trust Funds.
