Title of project: Impact of Airbnb on tourism industry, UK
Date: 03-04-2022
Introduction to the research
This research focuses on Airbnb and its impact on tourism Industry. Based on the purpose
of the report, the following research questions have been developed:
Research questions
❖ How are Airbnb doing in the tourism industry currently, and challenges they are facing
before and after COVID-19
❖ Examine the reasons why Airbnb customers choose them over other accommodating
competitors
Research objectives
❖ To review the literature about Airbnb and its impact on tourism industry
❖ To investigate the impact of Airbnb on the UK’s tourism sector before and after COVID-
19 pandemic?
❖ To discuss Airbnb trending in the UK’s tourism industry, why and are they still
successful against other competitors in the accommodation sector?
❖ To analyse why customers would choose Airbnb?
Method
Method of data collection
Since the topic chosen is broad in nature, quantitative methods will be used as we need
information in numerical values to understand the growth of Airbnb in the tourism sector,
UK. Quantitative methods will be used as we need information in numerical values to
understand the growth in the tourism sector in the UK due to Airbnb.
Participants
Online questionnaires to these participants regarding their influence of Airbnb to travel and
a different set of questionnaires will be sent out to people who have chosen the traditional
hotels over Airbnb to understand their opinion as well. The questionnaires will be sent out
to customers of Airbnb with a thank you note get a high response rate. Further, few structured
interviews will be conducted with the tourism officials in the UK, to receive rich information
and add in extra data to help in the evaluation process.
Sample Size
The sample size for this research will be aimed to collect 100 valid questionnaire who have
used both Airbnb and Hotels and for them to answer a questionnaire in comparing which
they prefer and why. Online questionnaire will be chosen by Convenience sampling. To get
reliable and valuable data, the criteria will be chosen by the experience and the expertise
possessed by the participants. This new research will bring the difference of understanding
how customers feel before and after the COVID-19 pandemic on whether they are confident
and happy with using Airbnb or prefer other accommodation such as hotels, B&B’s.
Analysis
Method of analysis
Quantitative method will be used to analyze the data and adding to that the impact of Airbnb
on the tourism sector in the UK can be understood in the graph comparing years when Airbnb
didn’t exist and the years after, to understand the substantial growth which can be achieved
by secondary data but to understand if the Airbnb is encouraging people to travel and to what
extent, surveys should be conducted with the help of office for national statistics and tourism
