3. • Acetone (IUPAC name Propan-2-one) is the organic
compound with the formula (CH3) 2 CO. It is the Simplest
Ketone. It is also known as dimethyl ketone and propanone.
• Acetone serves as an important solvent in the lab as well as
in the industry.
• It also serves as a cleaning agent as it is able to dissolve
almost all the compounds.

7. IMPURITIES IN ACETONE:
Major impurities in commercial grades of
acetone are methanol, acetic acid and water,
the analytical reagent contains less than 0.1
percent of the organic impurities
Although the water content may be as high as
1%.
