2. SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
DEFINITION: Surgical instruments are tools or devices that perform
such functions as cutting, dissecting, grasping, holding, retracting,
or suturing. Most surgical instruments are made from stainless
steel. Other metals and alloys, including titanium and vitallium, are
also used.
PURPOSE: Surgical instruments facilitate a variety of procedures
and operations. Specialized surgical packs contain the most common
instruments needed for particular surgeries.
DESCRIPTION: cutting and dissecting, clamping, grasping and
holding, dilating, retracting and suctioning.
4. SCISSORS
1. STRAIGHT BLUNT: Used to cut and dissect muscles.
2. STRAIGHT POINTED: Used to cut and dissect tissues.
3. LISTER’S BANDAGE: Used to remove bandages and dressings.
5. FORECEPS
1. TISSUE FORECEPS: Used for grasping and holding tissue, muscle or skin surrounding a
wound.
2. HEAMOSTATIC FORECEPS: Used to hold delicate tissues and compress bleeding vessels.
3. DISSECTING FORECEPS: Used to hold delicate visceral organs, hold blood vessels and nerves.
6. TOWEL CLIPS

4. MOYNIHAN’S TETRA FORECEPS
All these clips are used as accessories to
fix surgical towels to reduce the risk of

7. SCALPELS
A scalpel, or lancet, is a small and extremely sharp bladed
instrument used for surgery, anatomical dissection,
podiatry and various arts and crafts (called a hobby knife).
Scalpels may be single-use disposable or re-usable.
8. NEEDLES
1. HYPODERMIC:
2. SURGICAL:
• Straight Needles: used for skin closure in some surgeries. Straight
needles can be used for suturing without requiring the use of a needle
holder, as long as the suturing area offers good visibility.
• Curved Needles: used for skin closure and gastrointestinal, genitourinary
and respiratory surgeries.
• Cutting needles: have sharp points and edges so they can penetrate
tough skin easily.
• Suture Attachment needles: 1. Closed-eye needles need to have suture
tied through the eye, making them more bulky. 2. French-eye needles
are slitted, so that suture can be slid onto the needle.
