Curriculum Vitae
Personal Statement
I am an honest, hard working and enthusiastic person. I pride myself on being reliable and
responsible in all jobs I put my hands to. I enjoy being hands-on, having a sense of humour and
fun. I enjoy working as part of a team and having the opportunity to learn alongside my students.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that an effective teacher is passionate about their students, school and
community. Creating a learning environment that supports and encourages
children to be risk-takers, critical thinkers, to take ownership of their learning
and to love learning is important. It is important to view each child as an
individual, unique in their culture and identity and what they can contribute to
the classroom. To be a teacher who encourages students to reach their full
potential by presenting learning in a fun and exciting way. If I can be a teacher
that can fill all these roles, I believe that I can make a difference. I can be
someone who believes and hopes in the future of the students. That is why I
chose to be a teacher.

3. Literacy in the classroom
As a beginning teacher I envisage literacy in my classroom to be where the
students are engaged, will be reading from high interest level resources that
connects to their prior knowledge. Students will use technology where
appropriate; they will be asking questions and finding information. There will
be integration of current curriculum areas into the reading and writing
programmes.
Students will be grouped according to their learning needs and strengths.
Groups working with the teacher will use modelling books that they may use
for future reference. Groups not working with the teacher, will independently
in groups, or pairs, work from a task board that has activities that relate to the
learning intentions being taught. Grouping of students will be through teacher
observations, running records, spelling tests, writing samples, rubrics.
Students will also have the opportunity to self assess as well as peer assess.
Numeracy in the classroom:
I believe numeracy in the classroom needs to allow for whole class activities
which provide the students the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge.
Students need to have hands on activities to enhance their learning and
understanding of the concepts being taught. Students need to use materials
that they are able to manipulate and practice the new strategies that have
been taught.
Students will be grouped according to their strengths and learning needs.
Students will be assessed before during and after a unit has been taught. The
types of assessment will include NumPA, Gloss, Ikan, teacher observations
and teacher made assessment. Students working in groups will use a
modelling book where they will have opportunities to develop their own
strategies. Groups will work from a task board on activities that are problem-
centred. Students will have the opportunity to discuss, and share with each
other their understanding of the concepts being taught.
Behaviour Management in the classroom:
Having taken part in Motivation and Behaviour Difficulties paper, I believe in
the use of positive reinforcement in the classroom and building positive
relationships with the students. Students are rewarded for good behaviour,
are praised and encouraged. It is important to set clear boundaries in which
the students are part of the decision making of the classroom rules.

5. Shirlene According to Associate Teachers and Principals
“Pleasingly there was growth not only in Shirlene’s practical application, and planning but her confidence
grew immensely and there were considerable differences in the way she presented herself to the students
from week one to week four. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside of Shirlene and I believe that she has
made a superb start to her teaching career”
- Bex Clement (2009 Hinuera School)
“Shirlene thanks so much for your work at Hinuera. You fitted in so well and made a difference for the
children. Really appreciate it”.
- Dean McDonnell (2009 Principal Hinuera School)
“Shirlene demonstrates a highly professional attitude and has a positive and mature outlook. She is well
organised, dedicated and shows initiative and flexibility. She has made the most of any opportunity
presented to her. She has also made excellent use of resources and prepared and taught units of high
interest that were extremely innovative and relevant. It has been a pleasure to work with Shirlene over the
last 6 weeks and it has been exciting to see her grow as a teacher. This has been a most successful
practicum for her and I felt extremely comfortable with her assuming full control of my class. Thank you for
the contribution you have made to the life of Rm 10 Shirlene, the students have really enjoyed working with
you and we all wish you the very best for your future career in teaching.”
– Holly Brittenden (2010 Te Aroha Primary)
“It has been great having you at our school over the past 6 weeks. Our students have enjoyed having you
in their class as their teacher during your full control. Thank you for the contributions you have made to our
school during your time with us and in particular your support of our students after hours at the whole
school production and the speech competition. I wish you all the best as you continue with your studies.”
- Kevin Johnson (2010 Principle Te Aroha Primary)
“Shirlene set a good example from the beginning of this practicum as a teaching professional. Shirlene
displayed a positive attitude towards this practicum and got out of it what she put in. Nothing was ever a
problem and Shirlene took every moment to make this experience as worthwhile as possible. At all times
her approach was professional and her responsibilities taken seriously. She put the needs of the students
first when endeavouring to create powerful learning opportunities for them. She communicated honestly
with students using clear unambiguous language and listened with understanding to their needs. Shirlene
is an organised individual with excellent time management. Shirlene progressed well in this practicum due
to both her positive and professional approach. At all times she was well organised, punctual and showed
a willingness to work hard. Shirlene proved her ability to gain the respect of the students in a firm but
gentle manner. It has been a huge pleasure working alongside Shirlene and witnessing her growth in
confidence over the past five weeks. Shirlene displays a positive attitude in any new situation and displays
composure under pressure. I wish Shirlene all the best for her future career in teaching and thank her for
her positive contribution to Room 9 at David Street School. ”

To whom it may concern,
I have had the privilege of being the Associate Teacher for
SHIRLENE EVANS during her second year practicum as well as working with
Shirlene as a relieving teacher at our school throughout 2012.
She has made a considerable impression as a mature and talented teacher, who
possesses many natural abilities – a very positive and empathetic personality, an
ability to be flexible and adaptable, strong communication skills with students,
parents and Staff and a very conscientious nature.
Shirlene has worked hard at preparing herself for a career in teaching during her
training as evidenced by her knowledge of the curriculum and her skill in making
her planning thorough and purposeful. Shirlene has ability in generating a high
interest in the lessons and units she teaches, with the learning experiences well
prepared, innovative and fun. She is also able to evaluate and assess students’
progress and abilities realistically. Shirlene is sensitive towards the individual
needs within the class and works hard to establish an environment in which all
students can contribute, participate and achieve success.
Shirlene is firm but fair, establishing clear boundaries and high expectations. She
is able to demonstrate an understanding of different learning styles, abilities and
behaviour – this is reflected in her teaching approach and interaction with
students.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Shirlene for a Scale A teaching
position as she would be a valuable asset to have on the Staff. I wish her all the
very best for her future career in teaching.
Yours sincerely,
Holly Brittenden
Deputy Principal
