4. An Impression an imprint, either in one’s mind or on an object. To make a good
impression on your friend’s parents, don’t let your muddy boots to leave an
impression on their perfect white kitchen floor.
The noun “Impression” comes from the Latin word “imprimere” which
means “ press into or upon or stamp”.
When you press a coin into a piece of modeling clay there will be an
impression, or likeness of its design in the clay. Another kind of impression is a
performance in which you act, talk, move and even attempt to look like another
person, like the impression of your teacher that got you into trouble when he
saw you.
You have heard about it a lot no of times – First impressions are lasting
impressions, you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Nobody
will know how good you are unless you make a first good impression to them.

5. According to J K Rowling : “A good impression can work wonders”
So Impression could be defined as “An idea or feeling or opinion about something or someone
especially one formed without conscious thought or on the basis of little evidence.
It could also be defined as the way you feel about something, the way that something looks or
seems or we can describe impression as the impact we have on others.
It also could be defined as to leave an imprint on something or to influence something or
someone.
EXAMPLES :
When you meet someone and like them
When somebody acts angry.
The mark you make when you press your finger into clay.
Someone who meets you and continues to talk on and on about you.

6. BE POSITIVE : This means learning to face your fears, believe in yourself, success, suspend
judgment about others and be aware of body language. A smile and a positive energy is always
better than a negative tone.
DO YOUR RESEARCH : If you’re targeting someone in particular, doing research can help you
find a connection with that person.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY : Communication isn’t limited to the words you speak. Potential
contacts also glean information from the way you present yourself.
COMMUNICATE WITH CARE : It’s vital to be careful when you first speak to someone.

7. IMPORTANCE
Either consciously or unconsciously we make judgments about the professionalism, character and
competence of others based on first impression.
Impression whether it be good or bad are very important in our everyday life. They are the basis of how
relationships starts and how we are seen by other people. People based on first impression form opinion.
These opinions can sometimes leads towards success or could be ones that have a negative impact on hoe
people relate to you.
First impression play a vital role on people’s social life too.

8. TYPES
“First impression matters for good as well as for bad.”
Impressions are of two types :
Good Impression and Bad Impression
GOOD IMPRESSIONS :
Smile : Smiles can have remarkable affect on people.
Greet people approximately for the context : In many a situations handshake is
Communicate with body language : The body language of a person speaks a lot
about himself. Make appropriate eye contact and be aware of any nervous habits
on breaking them.

9. Practice Active Listening : Focus on what others say and ask questions that will allow
them to elaborate their thoughts. It is a skill for engaging to what others
are saying, allowing them to feel like their thoughts are heard, understood and
respected.
Keep them interested : When you are speaking pay attention to their interest level and
be ready to adjust your approach to keep them engaged.
BAD IMPRESSIONS : Bad impressions are hard to overcome. Whether you make a
bad impression socially or on your career path, it can change the course of your life.
You’re late for a very Important date : Its always bad to be late for a set appointment.
By being late you are showing a lack of respect for everyone else’s time.
Dressing for un-success : If you are not well dressed, it may have a bad impression on
others. Your appearance is one of the factor which influences how you are perceived by
others.

feeling, but if you are meeting someone for the first time, you should establish some level of

can be misinterpreted. Practice in front of the mirror if adjustments

11. ADVANTAGES
A positive first impression can’t guarantee that someone will like you, or that you’ll
always form a successful or profitable business relationship. But a good first
impression can help you optimize that important first contact with a potential
networking partner.
The tendency to quickly form lasting first impression establish the
framework within which a person’s subsequent actions and behavior will be judged.
There are a number of benefits to making a good first impression :
People will be more likely to relate to you if they’ve formed a positive image of
you as a person and a potential networking partner.
When people relate well to you, it will be easier for you to build valuable
partnerships and expand your network.
It will help you improve your self image and self confidence in proportion to your
newly acquired knowledge and networking experiences

12. Some more advantages are as follows :
First impression matters a good deal and results in less turnover.
New comer adjusts himself to work quickly.
Reduce employee dissatisfaction and grievances.
Develop a sense of belongings and commitment.
Social interactions.
12 9
13. Bad impressions are nothing to scoff at. They are a big deal. A bad impression
can set a tone for an entire relationship. I’m sure you can think of people you’ve
known for years who made a bad first impression on you, and you still
remember it years later.
Whether justified or not, these bad impressions have a tendency to sink
in, and they can lead to fewer opportunities, limit your income and
advancement chances at work, create an unfavourable reputation in your
community, or ruin any chances you had of progressing your relationship with a
beautiful lady you just met.
13 10
14. SOME EXAMPLES OF BAD IMPRESSION ARE :
Showing up unprepared : If you were asked to bring certain things to a meeting and show up
empty handed, your reliability will come into question quickly.
You forget to smile : Its one thing to be business oriented and serious. But if you can’t smile you
may be losing points. Don’t be afraid to offer a smile and be friendly and approachable.
You are terrible with names : When meeting new people it is important to keep their names in
mind. Calling someone by the wrong name can exude a bad vibe.
Using Cell phone : Using a cell phone at an inappropriate time and place is a huge source of
frustration for many. When in an interview or in a meeting switch off your cell phone and keep
aside.
14 11
15. Some Strategies from recovering from a bad impression are :
Decide whether or not to take an action : Before you decide how to address a bad first
impression, you must first ask whether its necessary to respond at all. Not all bad
impressions are created equal.
Take swift action and apologize immediately : The first thing we must know is that the
first impressions are forms very quickly. They are made faster than we realize. The first
step to approach for a bad impression is to apologize immediately.
Admit you mistakes, but don’t dwell on it : We’re all humans and we all make mistakes.
Realizing them and asking for an apology is the first step to recover from a bad
impression. Learn from your mistakes and never repeat it again.
Apologize later even if time has passed : Often people stall at making an apology
because they are not sure if one is necessary and then when they decide they should
apologize they are not sure if they should proceed because too much time has passed.
But the truth is even if you apologize hours or days later , people often appreciate the
gesture. 15

18. FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE NOT THE LAST IMPRESSIONS
At the end I would like to make out one final point i.e. Although we tend to put a lot of pressure on
ourselves to make a good one in fact, life coaches and cosmetics and clothing companies make billions each
year off that one basic human desire – the truth is that first impressions are not the last impressions.
At certain point, you must let go of the experiences. Often we are far harder on ourselves than
anyone else is. Although you might beat yourself up for weeks over some throwaway comment you utter at
a meeting, everyone else might have already forgotten about it before they even left the room. So, learn
from your mistakes and move on.
As David Stachowiak said, “throw your energies into making a better long
impression and your efforts will likely be better spent.”
