Benefits of the apprenticeship scheme
We caught up with Chris Homewood who started his career at KCC through
an apprenticeship scheme in 2008 with KCC legal services. Chris now
manages the KCC apprenticeship scheme within the Skills and Employability
Service, a role he has been in since 2012.
Chris opted for an apprenticeship in 2008 as opposed to completing further
education, ‘After my A-levels, I knew I didn’t want to go to university but preferred
the idea of working and gaining qualifications.’ This gave Chris an excellent
foundation on which to build his KCC career.
‘The skills I gained could not have been developed in a classroom or by reading a
textbook, it could only happen whilst working. The apprenticeship also gave me the
opportunity to explore different options and opportunities within KCC in order to
make an informed decision about what I wanted to do next.’
When looking at how the apprenticeship benefited the team, Chris found that the
placement was beneficial as it ‘enabled them to allocate work more effectively and
proved to be a very cost effective way of growing and developing their workforce.’
His favourite part of the apprenticeship was to work with such a diverse group of people.
Chris now manages the KCC Apprenticeship scheme, assisting managers with the recruitment process and
ensuring that apprentices succeed. ‘I also help employers across Kent who want to employ apprentices. Within a
few months of starting my programme I knew that I wanted to work in the Apprenticeship arena.’
In 2017, Chris will be undertaking a degree in apprenticeship in management. Chris believes ‘This is an opportunity
that I know I wouldn’t have had without pursuing a work based training route. Long term, I would like to move into a
strategic management role with an oversight of apprenticeships within KCC and across the county.’
Chris would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering a career at KCC and believes that ‘the
councils training and development offer is excellent and there are so many opportunities that you probably didn’t
know existed.’
