2. I'm Miss Autonomy, Miss
Nowhere
I'm at the bottom of me
Miss Androgyny, miss don't care
What I've done to me
I am misused like I wanted to
Be not your slave
Misguided, high-minded
I'm missing the train
And I don't know where I've
been
And I don't know what I'm into
And I don't know what I've
done to me
And as I watch you disappear
into the ground
My one mistake was that I never
let you down
So I'll waste my time and I'll
burn my mind
I'm Miss Nothing, I'm Miss
Everything
I'm Miss Fortune, Miss So Soon
Like a bottle of pain
Miss matter, you had her
Now she's going away
I'm am misused, misconstrued
But I don't need to be saved
Miss Slighted, high-minded
I'm second rate
And I don't know where I am
And I don't know what I'm into
And I don't know what I've
done to me
And as I watch you disappear
into the ground
My one mistake was that I
couldn't let you down
So I'll waste my time and I'll
burn my mind
I'm Miss nothing, I'm Miss
Everything, Miss Everything
And as I watch you disappear
into my head
Well, there's a man who's telling
me I might be dead
So I'll waste my time and I'll
burn my mind
So I'll waste my time and I'll
burn my mind
I'm Miss Nothing, I'm Miss
Everything
The lyrics song is based on the idea of losing
a loved one and the crumbling of your mind.
“And as I watch you disappear into the ground
My one mistake was that I never let you down
So I'll waste my time and I'll burn my mind”
It is also about the torture and suffering that
comes from this.
The music video itself its designed around the
last supper and the deterioration of Mary
Magdalene.
"It is about how Mary felt, and how she was
grieving, but I think a lot of people can relate
to it.“ –Taylor Momsen
LYRICS
3. There is a constant beat throughout played with the drums and guitar.
The lead singer flips her hair through the hard core beats and increases in pace
and as it slows the video is slower.
The music slows for the lyrics - “And I don't know where I've been
And I don't know what I'm into
And I don't know what I've done to me”
This is creates a focus on the lyrics to show their importance and to break away
from this into the fast rock beat we see the visual of her smashing a bottle on
his head. The deterioration of the music at this point also reflects the
deterioration of her mind which is the meaning of the lyrics.
MUSIC
4. The genre of music is post grunge/hard core rock, the style of music is
reflected in the video as all the members have dark clothing, leather jackets,
black make up and some even have dark sunglasses. Although this video is
designed to be the last supper it is more like a „last supper in hell‟ if you look
closely at the table you will notice a few items that are swaying more towards a
satanic representation rather than a Holy one.
GENRE/MISE EN SCENE
5. The music video, directed by Meiert Avis, was released on July 20 on VEVO and was
shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Because the focus of this video is sexual the
camerawork is centred around Taylor Momsen. Although at the beginning you get a
few close up shots of the other band members most of the video consists of close ups
and steady hand shots of Taylor Momsen. While Taylor is writhing around on the floor
steady hand shots are used so that the viewer gets to see the insanity that is meant to
come across through the performance. An arrangement of long shots were also used
to set the scene.
CAMERAWORK
6. The editing of this video consists of lots of fast cuts that are cut to the beat
of the music, for this music video it represents the way the lead singer is
shown to be losing her mind.
There are two different types of clips shown, most of them consist of
watching the singer move around the room and writhe around in a mist of
insanity. The other clips involve shots of Taylor Momsen singing, however
you will notice that she does not come out of character. This helps keep the
audience interested.
EDITING
7. Lead singer, Taylor Momsen, said the song was about "Mary Magdalene after
the crucifixion of Jesus."
"It is about how Mary felt, and how she was grieving, but I think a lot of
people can relate to it."
It begins with ten people sitting around a table in imitation of the Last
Supper. Taylor Momsen (as Mary Magdalene) starts to crawl over the table,
tipping over the food and spilling the drinks whilst singing as the rest watch.
The band confirmed it is set after the death of Christ.
The song was released as a digital download first on 27 July 2010, on the U.S., then at
the UK on 22 August 2010. The single was also released on a 7" 45 RPM picture disc.
The picture on the A-side depicts the single's cover, while the B-side has the same
picture as the EP.
INTERTEXTUALITY
8. This style of music usually has a music video that involves narrative and performance and most of the
other music videos made by The Pretty Reckless consists of this however this music video doesn‟t have
any clips of the band playing their instruments. The reason behind this is that the focus of this
song/video is „losing your mind‟ and „Mary Magdalene going insane‟. Taylor Momsen (the lead singer) is
the only person singing and this is because she has taken on the role of Mary Magdalene so the video is
focused on her.
The video also has a sexual focus to keep their fans interested so rather than focusing on the bands
performance it centres around Taylors sexual appeal.
It begins with ten people sitting around a table in imitation of the Last Supper. Taylor Momsen (as Mary
Magdalene) starts to crawl over the table, tipping over the food and spilling the drinks whilst singing as
the rest watch. Later she starts ripping apart a bouquet of roses. It ends with several famous people
having joined in surrounding the table with Momsen on it, most noticeably John Lennon and Jimi
Hendrix playing guitars and Charlie Chaplin.
NARRATIVE/PERFORMANCE
9. Although The Pretty Reckless are a band of 4 the main focus is of the hot
lead singer Taylor Momsen. In the rock industry a lot of the music and rock
and roll image is sexualised so having Taylor as the star image attracts the
target audience. When you see the band together or performing the Men don‟t
wear anything sexual and let Taylor take the spotlight. Even when the
individual band members are not performing and are just going about their
day to day life they stick to this image. This is shown in the Miss Nothing
music video as all the band members are sitting at the table watching while
Taylor writhes and crawls over and under the table.
STAR IMAGE/THE BRAND
10. This video has a lot of voyeurism in it, Taylor Momsen (the lead singer) is
shown in a sexual matter so that the band can entice their fans and keep them
interested.
The way that Taylor moves is considered to be sexual as she is writhing over
and under the table, some shots also consist of her laying across the table and
teasing the other band members.
Her costume is also revealing which is another way voyeurism is used to entice
the audience.
