3. Eagerness to be accepted can leave these children
“vulnerable to coercion” to perform sexual or other
acts that they believe, or are told to believe, will lead
to acceptance and friendship
Tharinger, 1990
5. PROBLEM
Special needs young adults are at an increased risk
for sexual assault and sexual violence
...because they are less able to identify, speak up
about, and therefore prevent it.
6. OUR DEFINITION
Sexual Assualt is any type of sexual contact or behavior
that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.
11. Adolescents with intellectual disabilities need to
categorize interactions they face from day to day. By
understanding relationships, you are more likely to
understand sexual assault if it were to happen to you
based on what is appropriate in that relationship.
Leslie Walker-Hirsch

(Define the Relationship)
19. It’s hard in any typical setting.
DTR. Defining the relationship. Asking the “What are we?” question.
We’ve all felt the confusion, the frustration of determining where you
stand with someone.
Someone who maybe you’ve gone on 1 date with, or maybe it’s been 20.
You’ve been texting for months and drop copious - maybe too strong?
am I coming off too strong? - emoji hints. What am I doing wrong?
What ARE we?
What is uncomfortable and difficult for a typical person to delineate, is
almost impossible for a person with special needs to understand.
The confusion with boundaries for special needs teens does not lie in
anatomy, but in the act of defining what a relationship is and what is
appropriate in said relationship. So, let’s set those boundaries- they’re
more important than you realize.
Let’s DTR.

“Hi friend, I’m Gnit from planet Blue Tettemer! I’ve seemed
to have to crash landed and need some help with getting
back home. Can you lend me a hand? When you safely talk
and make smart relationship choices with people, we can
advance in levels. After the final level I can go home! Do
you wish to play?”
“P.S: Remember playing with a buddy is more fun! During
Ally Fridays sit with an ally and they can help you along
with mission Gnit! Good luck!”
