Troubles in Engine system
1. About “ Troubles in Engine system”
GROUP- V
Welcome to our
Presentation
2. There are two types of Engine are as-
1) Internal Combustion Engines (IC Engines)
2) External combustion engine (EC Engine)
Engine:
An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one
form of energy into mechanical energy.
4. IC ENGINE EC ENGINE
1. The internal combustion
engine is an engine in which
the combustion of a fuel
(generally, fossil fuel) occurs with
an oxidizer (usually air) in
a combustion chamber.
1. An external combustion
engine (EC engine) is a heat
engine where an internal
working fluid is heated by
combustion of an external source,
through the engine wall or a heat
exchanger.
2. The combustion occurs inside
the engine.
2. The combustion occurs outside
the engine.
3. In external combustion engines,
the combustion products is used to
heat a second fluid that acts as the
working fluid.
3. In internal combustion engines,
the energy source is a combustible
mixture, and the combustion
products is the working fluid.
4. Examples: Gasoline engines,
Diesel Engines, Chemical
Rockets, Gas Turbine Engines
etc.
4. Examples: Steam Power
Plants, Home Heating furnaces
fueled by gas or oil, Starling
Engines etc.
5. 1. Aircraft engine
2. Automobile engine
3. Model engine
4. Motorcycle engine
5. Marine propulsion engines
such as Outboard motor
6. Non-road engine is the term
used to define engines that
are not used by vehicles on
roadways.
7. Railway locomotive engine
8. Spacecraft
propulsion engines such
as Rocket engine
9. Traction engine
10.Gasoline engine
11.Hesselman engine
12.HCCI engine
13.Hot bulb engine
14.IRIS engine
15.Solid-state engine etc.
Various types of engine
are as-
6. Low Power and Uneven Running:
Engine overheating
Improper fuel grades
Carburetor icing
Cracked pistons or cylinders
Wet or defective ignition wiring
Bent crankshaft
Spark plug wires crossed
Reasons behind of troubling
in different Engine system
7. High Oil Temperature:
Insufficient oil supply
Airflow through oil cooler b
locked
Overheated bearings
Improper ignition timing
Improper grade of fuel
Improper grade of fuel
Cylinder baffles missing or
insecure etc.
Excess Oil Consumption:
Improper grade of oil
Improper venting of oil syste
m
Piston rings worn, broken or
incorrectly installed
Cracked pistons
Defective supercharger seal
Piston oil drain holes clogge
d
Oil pressure too high
Too much clearance between
intake valve and guide etc.
8. Insufficient oil supply
Oil pump not primed
Foreign matter in relief valve
Broken oil line
Excessively diluted oil
Oil congealed in intake line
Leak in suction lines
Worn oil pump gears
Broken oil pump gears or drive shaft
Low Oil Pressure:
9. Improper grade of oil
Pressure relief valve stuck closed or improperly adjusted
Oil cold or frozen
Oil pipe bent or crushed
Oil Screen or filter clogged
Bearing tight due to engine overheating
High Oil Pressure:
10. Loose spark plug connectors
Water or oil in magnetos
Burned or pitted contact breaker points
Incorrect idling speed adjustment
Air leaks in induction system
Low cylinder compression
Internal carburetor trouble
Failure of Engine to
Idle Properly:
11. Magnetos grounded
Out of fuel
Air vent or fuel tank obstructed
Internal structural failure
Fuel lines partially obstructed
Sheared timing gears
Air or vapor lock in fuel line
Engine Stops:
12. Propeller out of balance or out of track
Bent crankshaft
Engine too cold
Engine loose on mount
Improper ignition timing
Carburetor icing
Engine Vibrates Ex
cessively:
13. Retarded spark or spark timed late
Defective water circulation
Thin oil
Running air cooled engine on ground too long
Insufficient oil cooling
Insufficient oil supply
Excessive carbon
Engine Overheats:
14. Mixture too lean
Improper grade of fuel
Air leaks in induction system
High carburetor air inlet temperature
Magnetos improperly timed
Damaged cylinder baffles, fins, or restri
ctions in airflow
High Cylinder
Head Temperature:
15. Magneto ground wires loose or broken
Faulty magneto switch
Engine excessively hot
Incandescent carbon in cylinders
Engine Won’t Stop
When Switch is Tur
ned Off:
16. Engine flooded with oil
Worn piston rings
Inferior quality of engine oil
Rich mixture
Engine operated for long period without
cleaning carbon
֎Causes of Excessive Carbon
