1. Personal Statement
My name is Yuanming (Shane) Qin. I had worked as an editor of that’s PRD English magazine1 for eight years and undertaken the post of Managing Editor from July 2010 to May 2013. As a senior media practitioner, I had experienced the transformation of print media and consolidated the market position of that’s PRD as South China’s premier English magazine. From writing and editing to publishing, managing both local and foreign editors, to establishing and maintaining positive relationships with cooperators, I have been practicing in my beloved area.
I started my editorial career in Urbanatomy Media, a brand affiliated to Shanghai Hezhou Advertising Co., Ltd. English magazines including that’s Shanghai, that’s Beijing, and that’s PRD published by Urbanatomy Media are most well-known by foreign readers who work and live in the above metropolises. In the early stage of my career, I endeavored to polish2 my skills in interviewing, reporting and writing. By modestly learning from foreign colleagues, my English proficiency had been increased to the advanced level which was illustrated by numerous articles I had written for that’s PRD. My interview skills had been approved when interviewing Chinese pioneering drama director Meng Jinghui, Artistic Director of America’s Mark Morris Dance Group Morris, Dutch architect and designer of the Canton Tower Mark Hemel, etc.
From May 2007 to October 2008, I was sent Shenzhen Branch take charge of the editing and production work of that’s PRD Shenzhen Version. Having solved the problems like source shortage and insufficient guidance, I worked with a small yet vigorous team to expand the popularity of our publication, and building up an interactive relationship with local communities. In return for my contribution to the company, I got promoted be first non-foreign Managing Editor since July 2010. In the following three years, I established management skills on the job, built and led an efficient Editorial team, with which I fulfilled the strategic objective that made that’s PRD an influential and reputable English magazine in South China region. Although I have faced many unexpected changes throughout these years, every time I greeted the challenge, withstood pressure, and got the situation under control.
For better understanding the essence of media and communication to explore the possibility of my career development, it was of great importance for me to upgrade my knowledge and expertise. In June 2013, I left Urbanatomy Media, and then went to study in the UK at Goldsmiths, University of London, which stands out of the crowd due to its top ranking in media disciplines. It has been proved that the experience at Goldsmiths gave me a fresh mind and the support I need for career breakthrough. I enjoyed the courses I undertook and passed all modules with excellent marks. With great interest in the area of
