PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
I am a journalist with more than 15 years of working experience. A Masters in English Literature from
Jadavpur University, Calcutta, I have worked in the editorial departments of prestigious media
organisations, such as The Statesman, The Indian Express Group, The Pioneer and Sakaal Times.
Currently, I am a Newsreader at the All India Radio and work as an independent writer and editor.
My career path has not been linear, rather it meandered through new challenges and whatever came my
way, I embraced it as a learning experience. Hence, I have the distinction of heading a news desk,
handling features desk, bringing out newspaper supplements on health, travel and women, planning
magazines, reporting on corporate and industry affairs, co-ordinating with internal departments and
networking with people in the industries and ministries.
I started my career as a Sub-Editor on the Nation Desk of The Statesman in 1997. Over the years, I had
the privilege of working as:

HARD SKILLS
1. Editing: Proficient in editing and rewriting copies. I acquired the skill when serving in the editorial
departments of media organizations such as The Statesman, The Indian Express Group, The Pioneer and
others as part of my responsibility was editing, polishing and rewriting in-house copies, columnists’
copies and contributors’ copies.
2. Online editing and content developing: As Chief Editor of NewsLink Services, owned by British
media company Headland Media, I helmed the online news operation in India for nearly four years.
Keeping with the trend of convergence of information, I also managed the content planning and content
development of their website and multi-media DVDs.
Further, as Features Editor of Friday Corporation, I was responsible for conceptualisation,
content planning and content development of the book and food verticals.
3. Feature Writing and Interviews: I was introduced to feature writing and page layout when given the
charge of introducing two new Feature sections SchoolScape and Teen World within six months of
joining the Statesman. I also handled the Art & Review section and Leisure pages of the Section II
supplement. During my stint, I wrote articles on diverse topics (from sexual harassment, gender issues,
child labour, drug abuse to art, films, food and lifestyle) and interviewed eminent personalities from
2. different fields (Shashi Tharoor, Nasseruddin Shah, Sunil Ganguly, Geeta Mukherjee and others). I also
reviewed dance, theatre and films and wrote a weekly column on TV.
Later, as Deputy Editor of the Supplement Section in Sakal Times, I was responsible for planning
and bringing out 16-page tabloids on health and wellness, global affairs and working women. As
Features Editor with the Friday Corporation, I wrote customised articles on wide range of topics and
interviewed eminent personalities for client websites and magazines.
4. Reporting : When I got the opportunity of heading the Delhi Bureau of the Indian Express Business
Publication Division that brings out B2B publications on IT, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism,
Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare, part of my responsibility was industry and corporate reporting,
interviewing Union Ministers and industry leaders, and writing news analysis. I was mainly involved with
health, tourism, hospitality and aviation industries.
Later, in Sakal Times, I interviewed political leaders before elections.
5. Translation: I have mastered the skill of translating from English to Bengali and vice versa Working
as News Reader cum Translator in the Bengali unit of All India Radio,. I had the privilege of doing
translation work for the National Geographic, Akashvani and Doordarshan.
6. Voice Artist: I honed my voice as an All India Radio Newsreader and a recitation artist. My warm
voice, distinct pronunciation, nice intonation and proficiency in spoken English, Bengali and Hindi
language enables me to do justice to any script.
SOFT SKILLS
1. Strong Interpersonal communication skills: I developed this skill by networking with Union
ministries, Embassies, National Tourist offices, industry leaders to have a finger on the pulse of
the industry and by interacting with celebrities and dignitaries. The trust I earned and the good
relation I developed helped me in organizing events and getting exclusive news and views.
2. Teamwork and people management skills: Handled teams of reporters and copy editors and
coordinated with designers and contributors in different organizations as I rose through the ranks.
I pitched in when manpower was less and deadline was looming large. I earned love and trust of
my teammates through cordial and open behaviour.
3. Time management skills: I acquired this skill in the media industry where time management is
essential as everything -- from reporting, filing story, editing to page layout and final production
– is time bound.
4. Adaptability: I have a passion for learning and an ability to continue to grow and stretch my
skills to adapt to the changing needs of the organization. My career path has not been linear,
rather it meandered through new challenges and whatever came my way, I embraced it as a
learning experience.
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Received LK Bakshi award for excellence in travel writing when working with The Indian Express
group.
3. • Successfully launched the SCHOOLSCAPE and TEENWORLD weekly supplements when working
with The Statesman. I was given the responsibility within six months of joining.
• Catapulted ExpressTravel&Tourism from an also-published magazine to the most-read-and-referred
industry publication.
• Turned around the NewsLink website. Viewership went up from 12,000 in Dec 2009 to 3 lakh plus in
Feb 2010.
