Having fun down by the river
Festival grooves despite band's obscene music

The Leaf-Chronicle
Longtime Clarksville residents Hollis and Kathleen Owen went to Riverfest out of curiosity Friday night.
"We've never been before," Hollis Owen said. "Seems like something good for community morale, and
to come out and get in on it."
The couple also had their hearts set on a tasty festival treat - chicken on a stick.
"We saw the sign from the road," Mr. Owen said.
The second night of the annual event was enjoyed by hundreds who came to enjoy not only the food, b
offering of musical entertainment.
With notable country acts like Hal Ketchum and Ty Herndon, a stirring performance by Dennis Edward
Temptations Review - as well as a spirited showing from a series of local hip-hop artists - Friday night's
wasn't left wanting for variety.
"It's good for the community - just getting different people together in one place," said Joel Erb of Clark
"A lot of people have a small-town mentality when it comes to Clarksville, and I think events like Riverfe
help people to see the bigger picture," Erb continued.
The only wrinkle in the evening's festivities came when one of the hip-hop acts, Nitty Gritty, performed
with sexual profanities - a violation of policy for Riverfest performers.
Nitty Gritty was performing as part of a showcase hosted by Unsigned Artists Mix - a local talent booki
owned by Seymour Hagans, who promptly joined the group on stage and asked them to leave.
"I want to apologize to the audience," Hagans said. "They did not rehearse that song, and I would just
they are a long way from being professionals.
"They should have been able to look at the audience full of families and realize how inappropriate that
got aggressive - what they were doing was not fun."
City Special Events Coordinator Jo Huber said hip-hop performances won't be banned from Riverfest,
future artist contracts will include a profanity clause that specifies a nonpayment penalty for performers
obscenities.
Unfortunately, the language slip cost other Unsigned Artists Mix performers the chance to share their t
remainder of the showcase was canceled after Nitty Gritty left the stage.
Artist Ashley Bell - who uses the stage name "Abells" - was supposed to perform after Nitty Gritty. She
was frustrated at being punished for someone else's mistake.
"I'm clean," she said. "I'm cutting edge, too, but what I do can still be played on the radio."
The shocked audience recovered quickly as the crowd grew throughout the night.
Ann Antomattei sashayed into Riverfest around 9 p.m., hips swaying as she waved a flashing light wan
beat of the music.
"I'm 60, and I love to dance," Antomattei said. "I'm ready to get down there and have some fun."
