Hunter Hancock was a radio DJ who did not know about "race records" aimed at black audiences in the South until a record producer gave him a list. Though he did not recognize any of the artists, he played two of the producer's records on his show that afternoon. Almost instantly, other local record distributors brought more "race records," and by the end of the next week his show consisted entirely of this rhythm and blues music, now commonly called R&B.
