2. What is submersibles Submersibles are mini submarines used by anybody but the military. Mostly used by oceanographers, and marine scientists.
3. The first submersible The first submersible was made by William Bourne in 1578, but no one never pulled though with his dream until 40 years later by Cornelius Drebbel in 1620. It consisted of six oars and twelve people operating them. The ship was basically an enclosed rowboat with leather hide to waterproof it.
4. The Alvin The Alvin is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The sub was made in 1964. It was named after Alvin the cartoon character.
5. What the Alvin has Its tools include video cameras, an underwater telephone, a computer, sonar, sediment corers, temperature probes, a magnetometer, and more. The Alvin also has manipulators that are used to collect scientific samples and to deploy equipment.
6. The Alvin's size The Alvin is 23 feet long and 12 feet high. It has a 6.5-foot-diameter pressure hull.
