Construction Project
Pekajsi Health Center
Health in Bolivia
There is a huge gap between the development of cities and rural areas in Bolivia; 6
out of 10 people do not have access to a Health Center. Bolivia's maternal infant
mortality is the highest in South America. Rural municipalities do not have sufficient
resources to build a Medical Center.
Pekajsi
It is a poor rural community located in the municipality of Vitichi (Potosí – Bolivia)
• It has a population of 703 inhabitants.
• It has a Health Post whose construction is old and very small.
• The community cannot benefit from the scope of the public health insurance,
causing low attendance at the health post.
• Medical emergencies are sent to the city of Potosi 130 km away (4 hours away).
• Access to the community, from its municipal seat is 34 km (1 and ½ hours), by dirt
road and in the rainy season the route becomes difficult.
Human Development Index
What do we plan to do?
1. Build a 240 m2 Health Center
in 5 months.
2. Building the Health Center
with community participation
and staff from Mano a Mano
Bolivia
What are the expected results?
• Improved maternal and infant health.
• Increased the number of medically-assisted births and the reduction of unnecessary
deaths.
• Easier access to family planning services.
• Access to primary care medicine and immunizations.
• Stronger preventative care and public health education.
• Improved access to government public health programs.
• Permanent health care workers in the community who have access.
