IT IS JUNE
T R A N S I T I O N T O Y 2
H A S B E G U N …
OVERVIEW –
END OF YEAR ASSIGNMENTS
• For the next 3 weeks you will be working on assignments that will be linked to work in
Year 2.
• Mainly this covers the following:
– Unit 11 – Preparing for Progresson in the Creative Media Production
– Unit 12 – Specialist Study in Creative Media Production
• Each of these units will link to your career choices and study choice in Year 2. As such
these will be linked to your own interests, specialisms and directions.
• This is essential work, not only for you to progress and be successful in Year 2, but also
they form 2 of 5 units in Year 2. This is important.
ASSIGNMENTS
• The following 3 weeks will be structured as follows:
– Week 1: UAL UCAS Proforma [drawing together all your previous units, looking at potential
progression options and beginning your personal statement], setting up UCAS and creating
your Wix website where your Year 2 work will be submitted
– Week 2: Personal Branding exercise – devising a logo and identity for yourself as a producer
and creative practicioner
– Week 3: Initial ideas and research objectives for your Specialist Study Essay [this is an
extended piece of research, investigation and critical writing that links to your Year 2 FMP]
WEEK 1 –
‘UAL UCAS PROFORMA’
• On Blackboard in the ‘Y2 Transition’ folder you will find the progression proforma
[along with the other resources you need for this and the following weeks of work].
• This document is fairly self evident, it covers your current qualification, potential
university choices and helps to start structuring your personal statement.
• You should complete this document regardless of your potential progression options
for next year – we are aware not everyone wants to apply to university – as the
information and writing in this will help you in future applications regardless of what
they are.
WEEK 1 –
UCAS ACCOUNT SET UP
• To start your application, look at the information on
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/ucas-undergraduate-getting-started
• To start to complete your application go to
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/register click on register and apply for
2021 and when prompted, enter the buzz word ‘Minster2021’ and select your course
name (Creative Media Production) for the right group.
• Make sure you note down your UCAS ID number and password.
• For the exam centre, use the drop down menu and enter ‘York College Sim Balk Lane’
to find it.
• Your fee code will be 02.
If you have any problems
please email your progress
tutor or
careers@yorkcollege.ac.uk
(Lindsey Skelly is the college
Careers Leader)
WEEK 1 –
WIX SET UP
• We use Wix.com for you to create your site for all your work in Year 2.
• You should approach this as a way of amking a site that reflects your style, looks professional and is clearly
navigable.
• Focus on setting up the sections below and make the site clean and clear to use.
• Avoid [API] the assisted set up and learn how to do it yourself, with some practice it’s quite straightforward.
• It should have the following:
– Front page with intro and your logo [we’ll be doing that next week] and following separate sections, ‘Factual’ ‘Client’
‘Contextual and Critical Studies’ ‘Progression’ ‘FMP’ ‘Portfolio’. Each of those headings should be on your menu to click
on, each should have a page on your site
• Wix works best if you just set up blank pages and avoid preset themes and content. When you use the editor
to set up the menu it will add those page [practice, it’s not too difficult]
• Choose a sensible and logical same for this website, it will not only be the link we use to access your work,
but also the link the moderator will use and the one that universities and employers might use.
• Naming suggestions: ‘yournameY2portfolio’ or ‘yournameY2creativemediawork’ [‘youname’ is your
name…]
Really good examples of good sites here
[not to mention great content!]:
https://yerodavison.wixsite.com/davisonsmedia
https://samschoettner.wixsite.com/portfolio
https://rebecca-
edwards.wixsite.com/2ndyearwork
https://tristanslater2000.wixsite.com/mysite
WEEK 1 –
WIX SET UP
• Quick tip, once you’ve registered with Wix.com [you could use the same google login
you used for your college blogger, youtube, etc] and you click on ‘create a new site’
you get the option to choose a style of site, click other and you’ll get a screen giving
you the option of the ADI or the Editior, use the editor, it’s the best way to create from
a template but you can easily remove anything that isn’t needed [pretty much all of it!]
• You should only have work on your site that is yours; videos, photos, etc.
We don’t expect an amazing site straightaway!
You should be looking to get a basic structure as
we’ve asked for and to fine tune and improve the
site as you go through the first term of Year 2.
WEEK 1 –
SUMMARY
• You should be doing the following:
– UAL UCAS Proforma
– UCAS account set up
– Wix site creation and basic navigation
– Email you new Wix site URL to your tutor
• Set: Monday 8th June
• Deadline: Friday 12th June
WEEK 2-
PRODUCTION COMPANY
• You need to come up with a production name and logo for
your own production company.
• You will use this on your website and for your submissions
and client work next year.
• This should be creative and demonstrate your
specialism/services.
• Your company name and logo should be inventive.
• Once you have a name, logo and you have completed the
Client project you will be a legitimate media producer.
• You may want to consider setting up a specific email
address and website for your company should you wish to
work in the media professionally and independently after
college.
• You need to come
up with a company
name.
• Restrictions
– The name needs to
be original and not
already exist
(google any names
you generate)
– It can’t use your
name’s initials or
surname
– It cannot use the
word “Production”
WEEK 2-
PRODUCTION COMPANY
LOGO CREATION
• Create a logo for your
brand/company.
• Use all original art/graphics tablet
drawings/scans/warped custom
shapes to create the graphical
images.
• Consider appropriate online
tutorials- YouTube has loads of Logo
tutorials
• Though these examples are
colourful- consider a simple black
and white image to start. These will
be used as your letterheads on
documents, contracts and job related
emails
• Use Dafont for interesting fonts
(though try and ensure they are
public domain (check the box in
WEEK 2 –
SUMMARY
• Devise production company name
• Devise production company logo
• Show your working and rejected ideas
• Apply production name and logo to your Wix site
• Submit this work in the portfolio section as ‘personal branding project’
• Set: Monday 15th June
• Deadline: Friday 19th June
WEEK 3 –
PERSONAL STUDY PROJECT PREP
• As part of Year 2 you will be working on a personal study project that will link to your own
personal interests and your choices in making your Year 2 FMP
• Once we start Year 2 we will look at previous work and some potential directions your final
essay could go, but for now we’re interested in the following:
– A title question that you could pose for the work
– Outline some sources
– Identify sections for the essay
• The following slides should help to get you started
• The document ‘Theory Essay’ on Blackboard adds more detail to this
PERSONAL RESEARCH PROJECT
• You need to produce a title/question that will explore an element of media that you are
passionate about.
• This could be centred around a specific director, company, practitioner, genre or a
social/historical/cultural context.
• From the question you decide you will need to write a minimum of a 1500 word essay
exploring the topic.
• You will need to include a minimum of 6 quotes/sources/statistics, reinforcing the topic
your are discussing, backing up your topics with media theory.
• You will also need to complete a bibliography of sources directly used in your essay.
PREPARATION FOR YEAR 2
• You need to;
1. Come up with a title/question that you will answer in your essay.
• Your question must be approved by your tutor to ensure it will allow you to achieve in the unit.
• You may wish to come up with more than 1 question and ask your tutor to pick the one that has
the most potential for high grades.
2. You need to find between 6-10 sources (Google Books etc.) that are linked to your
topic. Write these sources out in full Harvard Referencing style (see slides 8-10).
• To save yourself some time next year you can start to record some useful quotes from these
sources.
3. Come up with 2 or 3 subheadings of specific content that will help you answer your
title/question (slide 13)
EXAMPLE STATEMENTS
• Pure Imagination- A study of 3 films discussing how they defined the Fantasy Genre.
• To Spy For- The evolution of the Espionage films 1960-1990.
• Guys and Dolls- The Evolution of Sexuality in the Musical genre 1952-1976.
• Reaction to the Bomb- Social subtext within Japanese cinema of the 1950s.
