2. The Application Economy
Is Here (and Growing)
The Internet of Things, the cloud, social and other trends have deservedly
grabbed their share of headlines—but there’s a crucial common denominator
that may just surpass all of them in importance: the application. By 2017, the
combined value of paid apps, app-enabled purchases of goods and services
and in-app advertising is expected to double to $151 billion in the US.1
Welcome to the application economy.
Once considered nice-to-haves, applications are now one of the primary
interfaces connecting companies to their customers. The feel, functionality
and performance of your applications have a direct effect on your
business and your brand.

Changes and Challenges
Changes
Applications have a powerful effect on the way customers see
your company, and application performance management (APM) is
evolving rapidly. While the discipline originated inside the IT organization,
APM is now indispensable to the business and emerging as a
key strategic advantage.
Challenges
With more and more digital interactions, IT now owns the customer
experience. Your applications need to do more than just work—they need
to inspire. This means you need to perfect your practice and solve
perennial APM problems.

4. Changes
Generation 1: The Application
A decade ago, APM was concerned primarily with metrics and
dashboards. Companies relied on APM to monitor an
application’s performance, compile data and react to any bugs
or performance issues.
Generation 2: The Transaction
APM is now nearing the end of its second generation, during
which time companies shifted their APM focus to transactions
across many applications. The application ecosystem is more
complex and interconnected, and APM best practices are
centered on making logins, searches and other transactions as
fast and efficient as possible.
Generation 3: The User
As the next generation emerges, APM is transforming again
and zeroing in on the user. Companies are realizing that
functionality and basic usability are no longer enough. They
must now rely on their applications to create an inspiring
customer experience and help these companies win new
business and generate loyalty.

Challenges
Heterogeneity
Today’s IT organizations are coping with a dizzying array of applications, each requiring a degree of
specialization.
Complexity
Many applications are no longer connected directly to a back-end system. Modern applications depend
on an exponentially higher number of “hops” to execute a transaction.
Scale
Both heterogeneity and complexity contribute to the problem of scale. One application might require
hundreds of technology components, and most companies are running between 50 and 100
production applications.

6. The Emerging Need
for a New Approach
06
The stakes are now too high for companies to cling
to the APM status quo. In the application economy,
your customer is always just one bad experience
away from switching their allegiances to a rival
waiting in the wings.
As the third generation of APM develops, there’s a clear need for
a new model: one that keeps the user experience at the center.
In fact, a recent IDG study showed that only 25 percent of
companies said that they were “very confident” in their ability
to meet user expectations.1
In order to play a role in the next stage of APM’s evolution,
CA Technologies initiated a research project aimed at gaining
a more comprehensive understanding of what organizations
need from APM.

7. Research to Power—the
Next Generation of APM
Anecdotes and analyst reports reveal only a portion of the current APM
landscape. To truly understand what organizations need today, CA Technologies
went to the source: the individuals who rely on these tools on a daily basis.
With a mandate and sizable budget from our board of directors, CA talked to nearly 80 individuals from
17 companies. After conducting these hour-long interviews, some key themes began to emerge:
• Increasing Complexity
The sheer number of applications and APM tools now in use is resulting in a slower path to proficiency
for APM practitioners.
• Reliance on Experts
In many organizations, a handful of experts still hold the majority of APM knowledge—a holdover
arrangement from a previous APM era that can hinder companies competing in the application economy.
• Lack of Actionable Information
APM users are inundated with data that makes it difficult to tease out important information and insights.
• Insufficient Ways to Share
Companies struggle to integrate APM tools with other systems, making it difficult to collaborate and
quickly address problems.
Driven by this research, we set out to create an APM model that addresses these challenges and helps
organizations thrive in the application economy.

Easy
You need an APM solution that’s easy to adopt, configure and manage. And it needs to be
simple to use and to accommodate a range of skills and accelerate time-to-value.
The E.P.I.C. APM approach will allow you to:
• Better Understand and Manage Your Applications
You’ll benefit from an easier way to manage thousands of agents. You’ll also have a central repository with all agent
configurations and meta-data across all of your APM clusters. This gives you deeper insight into your applications and
the ability to manage at an enterprise scale.
• Automate Your Application Instrumentation
Now, you can leverage dynamic app views to watch the transactions that are most important to your role. Along with
the ability to notify you of specific errors and stalls, the E.P.I.C. APM approach dynamically triggers evidence collection
and allows instrumentation to automatically adapt based on runtime performance analysis and front-end detection.
• Start Monitoring Immediately
Integration with release automation tools means that development teams can deploy agents in pre-production so an
application can be monitored for performance the second that it goes live.

Proactive
APM users need the tools that allow them to
proactively manage application performance
rather than simply react to sub-standard
performance or outages.
The E.P.I.C. APM approach will allow you to:
• Maintain an optimal user experience.
No matter how quickly you react to problems, it won’t be fast
enough to prevent the loss of customers and damage to your
brand. The E.P.I.C. APM model gives you the tools to proactively
manage application performance and create a culture of
continuous performance improvement.
• Interface with other systems.
By linking your application tools with other systems, APM can play
a more significant role in your customer’s experience. For example,
if your customer’s banking application crashes while attempting to
transfer funds, an APM system that is connected to your CRM can
proactively alert the right employee in order to phone the
customer so the transaction can be completed.
• Provide the right information to the right people.
Today, everyone in your organization shares the responsibility for
creating an exceptional customer experience. With the E.P.I.C.
approach, APM can now step beyond IT and proactively deliver
essential information to development, operations and other
stakeholders and foster the collaboration necessary to win in the
application economy.

11. Intelligent
The next phase of APM calls for an intelligent approach to data
that helps continually refine and improve applications.
The E.P.I.C. APM approach will allow you to:
• Improve your signal-to-noise ratio.
Alerts, reports and metrics can all be double-edged swords. Too much raw data without actionable insight means
that application issues go unchecked and your customer experience can be degraded. With our approach, we’ve
put a premium on usable information and created a set of tools that more accurately filter out the noise, so you
can quickly identify and remedy problems with your applications.
• Empower all APM users.
At one time, only highly skilled APM experts could track down and solve problems, but today you must empower
all of your APM users, regardless of their title or level of expertise. The E.P.I.C. approach is powered by built-in
intelligence that helps any user detect, isolate and address application issues, whether they are inside or outside
your company. It even lets you roll back time and view the changes made prior to any incident.
• Support modern standards.
The application economy runs on a wide variety of languages and platforms powered by technologies, such as
Java™, .NET, Node.js, MongoDB, Docker and microservices. The E.P.I.C. approach accommodates all of these—and
more—so you can build the application environment that is ideally suited for your company’s needs.

Collaborative
Administrators are no longer the sole owners of the
application (and the user experience). A new approach
to APM calls for greater collaboration across the
entirety of the application lifecycle.
The E.P.I.C. APM approach will allow you to:
• Improve performance at the starting line.
The E.P.I.C. model means that developers can rely on APM to create
more powerful applications. At the beginning of the application
lifecycle, this new approach allows developers to do more thorough
pre-production testing to ensure higher quality.
• Break down the silos.
Most companies have developed their APM systems organically,
adding ad hoc systems and APM practitioners over time. The
resulting silos make it difficult to share the necessary information
needed to build, maintain and optimize applications. At its core,
E.P.I.C. APM is collaborative and offers a shared performance
language that can speed the flow of information among developers
and application owners to speed up remediation.
• Bring value to the business.
Our new approach also means that APM can now extend beyond
IT and into the business. For example, marketing can monitor
the user experience in real time, watching behavior and tracking
click-through paths that map to purchases. Because the tools are
smart and simple enough for non-IT users, E.P.I.C. APM allows the
business to more fully collaborate with developers and operations
to improve application effectiveness.
