2. INTRODUCTION TO SOCIALISM
➢ What is Socialism ? - A political and economic system in which property and the means of
production are owned in common, typically controlled by the state or government. Socialism is based on
the idea that common or public ownership of resources and means of production leads to a more equal
society.
➢ What was need for Socialism in Europe ? - In the mid and late nineteenth century , at the
peak of industrial revolution, rich individual maintained property like industries that gave employment to
commoners. In this process, the rich owners was only concerned with their personal gain and not
welfare of those who made the property productive. So people believed if society as a whole would
control these properties then more attention would be paid to collective social interest. In these process
the society would be more productive and economy would rise.
➢ Practice of socialism- The concept and significance of Socialism was understood by people. But
how would they implement it? Different philosophers and politicians had some views about it-
Karl Marx – Indeed , Marx idea of socialism was very much accepted. According to him, capitalist society
was needed to be converted into socialist society. To do this, workers had to construct a radical socialist
society where all property would be socially controlled, or a communist party was needed to be formed.
Experiment of Robert Owen- Based on Marx’s thought, Co-operative society was formed under him. In
his experiment he found that this system of co-operatives indeed works but for small region. But his
experiment inspired different political parties in Russia and Other parts of Europe ; slowly how Russia
transformed from Tsar Reign to Communist country we will find in next slide.

3. RUSSIAN REVOLUTION & SOCIALISM
In this slide we will learn some steps by which Russia became socialist country.
• AUTOCRATIC REIGN OF TSAR NICHOLAS II – Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II was a very autocratic ruler and
Russian citizens wanted to get rid of him.
• WORLDWAR AND FEBRUARY REVOLUTION- In long war of First World War, people were angry and they
wanted to discontinue it. Many political parties started to campaign for socialism among of which
All Rusian Communist Party was significant one.
• BOLSHEVIK IN POWER- Bolshevik party lead by Vladmir Lenin , got power on basis of April Theses
which motivated general Russians. After getting power he implanted April theses.
• CIVIL WAR- Then also many Russian conservatives and enemies of Bolsheviks started a civil war
against Bolsheviks. Although Whites (Pro-Tsarist and enemy of Bolsheviks) had foreign support
from UK, Japan , USA and France who was worried of same situation if arises in their country,
Reds( Bolsheviks ) own civil war and since then till 1991 Russian empire (Soviet Union)was in hand
of Bolsheviks.
4. IMPACT OF SOCIALISM IN RUSSIA
Five Year Plans and Nationalisations –
• Soviet government made five year plans in which centralised economical targets and investments
were made.
• Apart from this, they also nationalised industries and banks so that no more rich people can
control it, and in turn the profit can be socially shared by the workers.
Impact of Socialism
• This geared up industrial revolution and new industries came which gave more job opportunities
and more wealth to society.
• Schooling systems developed, everybody got chance to enter universities.
• But rapid industrialization some time resulted poor working competition.
5. COLLECTIVISATION AND CONCLUSION
• When Lenin was leader, there were several positive socialist changes in Soviet Russia.
• Although there were some ups or downs, overall affect was quite positive.
• After his death , Joseph Stalin became leader. In his reign he introduced collectivisation of
farms which according to him would snatch land from wealthy farmers and would in turn make
socialism more effective.
• However , it seemed that it actually created problems and production did not increased rapidly.
• Moreover, Socialist Russia went through many ups and downs but overall socialism indeed
improved Russia until it collapse in 1991 due to cold war.
