4. What led the herons to move their nesting from the Northern to the southern
juodkrantė? Historical sources tells us about their struggle with an
aggressive entrant in cormorants. Cormorants appeared in 1803. They
settled close to the herons and cormorants and Herons began to move the
cormorants' colony to Juodkrante. Herons were gradually moved to the
periphery. They began to migrate south of Juodkrante after 10 years under
two separate colonies of herons and cormorants on the northern edge of the
southern colonies and Juodkrante.

It is a strange fight between cormorants and herons. Cormorants have
moved their colony to the South near the herons. To 1978 Great cormorants
have been very rare in Lithuania, in the Curonian Lagoon, they're guests at

isolated birds, mostly in spring and autumn migration periods.
6. Another wave of the cormorants reached the Juodkrante in 1974-1978.
Gradually, the herons were forced to give up a significant part of their
nesting when, in 1995, when it's recorded the lowest amount of farming to
the herons.
Now, side by side, there are two colonies of herons and cormorants. In
2002, the accounting data was 500 pairs of herons and 2,000 pairs of
cormorant. Cormorants and herons are protected by the law.
