smart city context?

aroundfourmajorpillars:environ-

ofsocialimpact.Forexample,anew
trendbuiltaroundwearablescon-
nectsdevicestothecloudandmaps
crucialparametersofyourlife.The
datathatiscapturedisimportantand
weuseitforourbenefit,whichinthis
case,isimprovingourhealth. Soit
isallaboutextractingrelevantdata
fromaparticularsystem,machine,
humanbodyorconnecteddevices
acrossthecity.Unlessyouhavethis
ecosystem,theentirecycleofIoTwill
notbecomeareality.
VK:Whatchallengesdoyouseeinthe
wideruseoftheInternetofThings(IoT)for
smartercities?
SJ:Thecloudhassolvedstorage
challengesandbandwidthimpedi-
mentswillsoongoawaytoo.Thisis
wherecomputingbecomescrucial.
Forexample,todayyouhavestreet
lightsthathaveintegratedcameras
thatdoubleasasurveillancesys-
tembutthelastthingyouwantisa
surveillancesystemsendingimages
backtoalegacydatacentre.Whatif
thepowerofthecloudandthepower
tocomputetogethercruncheddatato
understandeventsandimmediately
convertedthemintoaction? Thatis
theintelligenceofIoTworkingina
smartcity. Todaywhenwearetalking
aboutmakinginfrastructuresmarter,
theremustbewaysandmeansto
makelegacysystemsintelligentas
well.Thatisthefirstchallenge.

VK:Howdoyouenvisagedifferentplayers
comingtogethertoharnessthepowerofIoT?
SJ:Idonotthinkthereisanyone
companythatcangoitaloneto
realisethepotentialofIoT.Totake
theearlierexampleforward,thesame
trafficsignalwouldneedtechnology-
building-blockproviderslikeIntelfor
thegatewaybox,whowouldprovide
theserveranddatacentres;service
providersforthesoftware;someone
forapplications;andothersoftware
vendorswhowouldactuallydeploy
thisforacity’smunicipalbodies.
Thentherewouldbeanalyticsteams
tomanagethetrafficandotherdata
relatedtoreal-timepredictionof
crimeandotherthings.Ourintent
istoeasedeployment.Crucialtothe
entireecosystemisthesysteminte-
gratortopullalltheseparatebuilding
blockstogetherandboostthemup
asanend-to-endsolutiontodevelop
applicationsanddriveservices.
VK: Can the government build market places
on top of IoT platforms?
SJ:Absolutely.Bothindividualsand
startupscanuseIntel’sarchitecture
tocreatebuildingblocksforsmart
citiesanddeveloptheirappsand
hosttheminthecloudintheform
ofdifferentservices.InKarnataka,
thecomputerisationofthePublic
DistributionSystem(PDS),anew
modelthatisalreadylive,providesa
combinationofelectronicweighing
scalesplusapointofsaleterminal.
Itisbiometrics-enabledandbacked
withAadhaardataonthebackend
server.Withthehelpofreal-time
informationprovidedbytheserver,
ithelpsbeneficiariesgetwhatthey
need,whileprovidingthemwith
termsofentitlementintheirlocal
language.Thegovernmentistrying
todriveefficiencyandmakeituser-
friendly,whileensuringaccount-
ability.InKarnatakawealready
havearound7,000connectedPDS
systemsinstalled.
Transportationisanotherarea
whereIoTandsmartcitiesconverge.
Connectedcarsandfleetmanage-
mentareevolvinginabigwaytobuild
servicesinthecloud.Wehaveawork-
ingproofofconceptunderfieldtrials.
Wearetryingtousedatafromsen-
sorsincars,whichcanprovidedriv-
ingpatternsofindividuals.Ifitshows
aharshuseofbrakes,forexample,the
fleetcompanycanusebothreal-time
andhistoricaldatatopredictwhether
thereisaproblemwiththeroadorif
thedrivingitselfisrash.
Thegovernmentshouldalsouse
datatomakecitiessmarter.Accessto
sensordataof,say,vehiclesorstreet
lightscanpredicttheirfailure;track
transactionslikebusticketsales;
monitorpublicsafetyandmake
responsesmoreproactive.Ithinkit
isallabouttherightvisionofservices
forconsumers.Thereareenough
stakeholdersintheecosystemtoget
thingsdone.
VK:WhoisgoingtofundIndia’ssmartcities?
SJ:Therearevariousways,viaeither
thegovernmentorsystemintegra-
tors.Takethebusexample.Ifthereis
adeviceinsideabusfornavigation,
tracking,infotainmentandsurveil-
lance,thisgivesaccesstothetelemat-
icsunittotrackthebus.Youcanrun
advertisements,forexample,tomake
itarevenuegeneratingstream.It
createsarevenuemodelthatcanbe
sharedwith,say,thelocaltransport
authority.Thiswouldnotdependon
thebudgetthetransportauthority
has,butonhowitwantstodrivean
end-to-endsolution. Itisallabout
theevolvingbusinessmodels. That
iswhypublicprivatepartnerships
areimportant.Ifyoushowabusiness
modeltoanSIandiftheyseeareturn
oninvestment,albeitforsomething
thatisscalableandreplicable,invest-
mentswillcome.InIOTthebiggest
challengeinthenextfiveyearswillbe
tosetupalltheseworkingmodels.<
IoT can help make responses more
proactive than reactive. For the
government, it is all about having the
right vision of services for consumers.
