Global warming, also referred to as climate change, is the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system and its related effects
2. Introduction
• Increasing temperature of earth’s
environment.
• Who is responsible and what are the
causes?
• What can/should be done about these
issues?
3. History of Earth’s Climate
• Earth formed around 4.6 billion years
ago
• Originally it was very hot.
• There were heavy gases in earth’s
environment.
– Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide,
Hydrogen Sulfide, Ammonia and Water
Vapour.
4. History of Earth’s Climate
• Life appeared around 3.8 billion years ago
• With the appearance of life,
Photosynthesis began 3.5-2.5 billion years
ago
– Produced oxygen and removed carbon
dioxide and methane (greenhouse gases)
– Earth went through periods of cooling
(“Snowball Earth”) and warming
8. Facts about GHG emission:
•25% of the world’s total green house gases is emitted by US
only.
•50% of electricity in the United States is produced from coal.
•40% Of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions come from
households: Vehicles, Home heating, Electricity.
•These greenhouse gases last a long time…
•Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for approximately 100
years, methane lasts about 12 years. Other greenhouse gases
last even longer.
9. Future Carbon Dioxide
Levels
• Increasing CO2 emissions, especially
in China and developing countries
• Likely to double within 150 years:
– Increased coal usage
– Increased natural gas usage
– Decreased petroleum usage
10. So how can each of us slow
global warming now?
11. Because greenhouse gas emissions are directly linked to our energy
consumption, use of less fossil fuel based energy emits fewer greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere.
Use of LED/CFL bulbs.
Use of energy star home appliances.
Recycling of garbage.
Prudent use of lights and other electronic devices.
Use of fresh edibles instead of canned or frozen ones.
Use of reusable cloth bags instead of plastic or paper carry bags as
plastic carry bags are not bio degradable.
Reduce our consumption of fossil fuels
