German Americans
We traveled to America to build a better life, but now that America has joined the war
against Germany, no one in the U.S. trusts us. I can’t believe they vandalized our store last
night out of hate for us. We worked so hard and spent every penny we had to open it.
German Americans
Since America decided to join the in the war against Germany everything in the U.S.
considered German is being banished or changed. German music is no longer played by
the orchestra, German street sign names are being changed, and we are been harassed.
So much for being considered a American Citizen!
Jewish Americans
We support American troops and raise money for WWI through the Jewish Welfare
Board, yet we are still discriminated upon by organizations like the Ku Klux Klan.
Jewish Americans
The government thinks our money is good enough to buy bonds to support the war, but
Jews are not good enough to get government protection from anti-Semitic groups.
Asian Americans
We came here to live a better life, to be free. Even though the Americans tried to
kick us out of America, we still joined the army and fought in the Great War.
Asian Americans
Finally, we are allowed to become citizens in the U.S. due to our efforts in WWI. It’s
about time!

Hispanic Americans
We moved to Chicago to get factory jobs after the white people left for the
war. It is crazy how many jobs suddenly became available for Hispanics when
the U.S. went to war.
Hispanic Americans
My husband volunteered to fight in the war with the white Americans even
though there were language barriers. He fought bravely and came back with
a sense of pride. Now that he is back from the war, he is determined to fight
against discrimination.
Dissenters
Being a nurse in the war paid off. People finally see women’s value. We
can finally vote!
Dissenters
Why shouldn’t I be allowed to protest against this war? What happened
to the First Amendment? What happened to freedom of speech?
Women
I’m tired from working a man’s job, but someone has to do the work while our
men are fighting in the war. There’s definitely plenty of work to be done and
the pay isn’t too bad either.
