Objective: EDF+Business’ Food and Agriculture team is creating a strategy for the best
opportunities to engage in the Scope 3 emissions accounting space. We have expertise in working
with companies on how to reduce the environmental impact of commodity agriculture, specifically
related to water quality, climate, and forest outcomes. To date, this work has focused on
specific projects for corporate collaborators. We are hoping to understand how EDF’s unique
expertise can be leveraged to effectively drive improvements in Scope 3 emissions accounting space.
We are hiring a consultant to conduct an assessment of the current state of Scope 3 emissions
accounting for agriculture-based supply chains to inform EDF strategy creation. We are specifically
interested in Scope 3 accounting around land use change/deforestation, nutrient management, soil
carbon, and soil health practices.
I. Scope of Work: An emissions accounting or climate professional (Consultant) will conduct
research on the state of Scope 3 emissions accounting in agricultural supply chains to answer
the questions below. The Consultant can decide whether or not they will interview Scope 3
accounting professionals in agriculture as a part of this landscape assessment. Research
questions include:
What are the most common tools, methodologies, practices and products that food or
agricultural companies are using to set science-based targets to reduce GHG emissions
from agricultural supply chains?
What are the most common tools, methodologies, practices and products that food or
agricultural companies are using to implement supply chain sustainability and track
progress against Scope 3 GHG emissions targets?
What are the differences among these various tools/methodologies? What are their
various strengths and weaknesses?
What are the major gaps in these tools/methodologies? What topics do not have
established methodologies?
o Where do these gaps align with EDF+Business’ work and unique value add?
What organizations and companies provide Scope 3 emissions accounting assistance or
consulting?
o What are these organizations preferred methods, scope of work, and expertise?
What are the costs?
What convening bodies (conferences, multi-stakeholder discussions, etc.) exist to help
companies understand how to account for Scope 3 emissions in agricultural sectors?
EDF+Business will use these findings to assess the most strategic opportunities for us to use
our expertise to influence and improve outcomes in this space.
II. Deliverables:
a. Draft landscape assessment paper
b. Final landscape assessment report and PowerPoint presentation deck
