FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Recognize that friendship skills don’t come easily to
or naturally for every child.
Friendships may be particularly difficult for children
who are struggling with mental health,
neurodevelopmental, and/or behavioural challenge.
Your child may need a little extra help learning how to
regulate his emotions and his attention and some
extra practice understanding how friendships work.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Consider what is realistic for your child right now
Respect your child’s temperament and consider where he
is at developmentally as you look for ways to encourage
your child to work on his friendship skills.
Examples:
Can you think of an extra-curricular activity that he
would enjoy and that would provide him with
opportunities to work on his friendship skills?
Is he ready to have a friend join him on a family outing?

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Look for allies beyond the
family
Get to know the parents of
other children in your friend’s
class.
Join forces with your child’s
teacher. Maybe she can think of
ways your child could work on
his friendship skills at school.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Help your child to understand how
her behaviour affects other
people—and vice versa.
Help her to identify any behaviours
that could be contributing to
difficulties in her relationships: not
looking people in the eye when she
is speaking to them, speaking too
quietly or too loudly, interrupting
other people repeatedly.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Give her the opportunity to work on underlying skills
(emotional regulation, for example) that will lead to
improvements on the friendship front.
Help her to identify the strategies that work best for
her in regulating her emotions—and help her to
understand how regulating her emotions will help her
to function better in relationships.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Help your child to understand how friendships work
Dissect social encounters—both situations your child
has been directly involved in and situations he has
observed (including situations in books he has read or
movies he has watched).
Role-play different outcomes to the same situation.
What could you do or say differently? How might that
affect the way things turn out?
Encourage your child to see the same situation from
different perspectives. (Consider how different the
view is if you sit on different sides of the same room.)

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
Help your child to understand that conflict in
relationships is normal and relationships can be
repaired.
Talk about the reasons why conflict occurs
(miscommunication, emotional outbursts, having
different perspectives on the same situation)
Talk about ways to go about repairing a relationship if
a conflict has occurred.

BULLYING
One in three
Approximately one in three
Canadian children is bullied
on a regular basis, putting
them at risk of a variety of
mental and physical health
problems throughout
childhood and beyond.

BULLYING
Some children face an
increased risk of being bullied.
Children who show signs of
depression, anxiety, or
excessive aggression at the
time they enter first grade are
at risk of being chronically
victimized by their classmates
two years later.

BULLYING
What parents and teachers can do to help
Help children to work on any underlying areas of
difficulty, so they won’t be as vulnerable to being
bullied. Children who are rejected by their peers early
on miss out on the opportunity to socialize with other
children, causing them to fall behind their peers when
it comes to understanding how relationships work.
Help your child to be emotionally literate. Talk about
how emotions work and how we can ensure that they
work for, not against, us.

BULLYING
What parents and teachers can do to help
Encourage pro-social behaviours amongst all children.
Teach your child to ask for help in a way that
strengthens relationships, minimizes conflict, and
encourages the other person to want to help.
Take your child’s concerns seriously and help her to
come up with a plan for dealing with bullying.
Help your child to develop strong relationships with
you, his teacher, and a peer.

BULLYING
Parenting strategies to support a
child who is being bullied
Ask yourself, “What would make
things better for my child right
now?”
Validate your child’s emotions.
Be a source of calm in your child’s
life.
Encourage your child to treat
himself with self-compassion.

QUESTIONS? Please #AskCSS!
Good evening everyone, and welcome to today's webinar, Bullying SOS: Support and Strategies for Parents. My name is <INSERT YOUR NAME> and I’m happy to be the moderator for this evening’s webinar.
Tonight’s discussion is an important one and we want to share tips with you and towards the end of the webinar we want to be able to answer your questions.
Before we get started, I’d like to go over a few items so you know how to participate in today’s event.
