Bullying is a widespread issue that can have devastating mental and physical health impacts. It occurs everywhere, including schools, workplaces, and other social settings, negatively affecting victims regardless of age, gender, or background. Parents and guardians must play a role in addressing bullying by observing their child's behavior, talking to them, and working with schools to stop bullying initiatives. Effective anti-bullying strategies include open communication, teaching conflict resolution skills, monitoring friend groups, and promoting empathy and respect among all people.
2. The many researches on bullying have predominantly shown that
bullying is not only limited to a particular place, but it’s practised
everywhere and can be devastating to the victim's mental & physical
health. Bullying in schools/colleges/workplace has become an
alarming issue in today’s social setting, which impacts a person
irrespective of age, gender, or background. Anti-bullying initiatives or
groups are the need of the hour to stop bullying. Mostly it has been
observed that bullying affects an individual’s psychology and
personality development during the foundation years, i.e., in schools.
Here, parents or guardians need to play a crucial role – they need to
be extra vigilant and observe their child’s behaviour and try to figure
out whether he/she gets bullied in school or plays the role of a bully.
Now let’s understand more about how to deal with bullies in a better
and effective way:
3. First, understand what bullying really is.You
must learn the difference between a
spontaneously rude or inconsiderate behaviour
and actions that are intentionally cruel.
Establish a connection with your child by having
hearty talks and then try to understand the
reason behind this behaviour. Maybe they are
getting bullied at school and that is why they
have started to behave the same. Collect the
facts that others say about your child. After
having identified the real reason, look for
solutions or ways to stop this behaviour.
4. Make time for your child.Try to listen to their
problems seriously and more often. Also, make
them understand that bullying others or being a
silent victim to bullying is unacceptable.
Teach your kids the ability to handle conflicts
independently and with dignity. Make them
learn and understand to keep a watch on their
actions and behaviour.Talk often about kindness
and empathy. Explain to them their many life-
altering benefits and how they can practice
them on a daily basis.
5. Talk to the school management regularly and ask for
your child’s behavioural feedback. Support the
measures/initiatives to stop bullying at school.
Keep an eye on the friend circle of your child. They
may be in a group that exhibits bullying behavior.
Encourage your child to form groups or alliances with
such people who stay away from bullying or any such
kind of behaviour.
You can even suggest movies/TV-series/events/shows
that encourage your children to bring out their human
side in their day-to-day chores more often.
6. If your children want to talk to you about
bullying or any such issue, then do not turn a
blind eye to them. Listen to them thoroughly
and suggest ways to stop such kind of behaviour.
Do not indulge in the blame game by looking for
ways to blame someone else like blaming the
school management or any third person for such
behaviour. Rather try to reach the root cause of
it so that bullying can’t be repeated in future.
7. If your children resort to bullying behaviour, don’t
justify their behaviour that they might have acted in
response or something like that. Explain to them that
bullying in any form or being a silent victim to bullying
is unacceptable. Encourage them to discuss such
issues openly.
Don’t act like you know your child’s behaviour and
he/she cannot do that. Maybe you don’t necessarily
know how they behave outside or in front of their
friends.
Don’t make positive comments about bullying
behaviour, even jokingly, in front of your kids, as it
might encourage them to keep doing the same.
8. Bullying is a sensitive issue and most of the times,
unavoidable. Bullying has many faces and can
happen to anyone, at any stage of life. In fact, with
the advent of digital & social media, bullying
instances are increasing day-by-day. Resorting to
proper guidance rather than forced control or
coercion are suggestive anti-bullying strategies.
Bullying does not take place when a group of
members are empathetic and respectful towards
each other and work towards finding cooperative
ways to resolve disagreements and discords.
