The document outlines a 6 week project to design a wireless network for Walmart's new store in Mississauga, Canada. Over the 6 weeks, the team gathered requirements, created documentation like a floor plan and budget, analyzed the site, selected network equipment, and designed the network architecture. They delivered weekly reports and documentation covering tasks like stakeholder meetings, team formation, requirements gathering, site surveys, equipment selection, and network diagrams. The concluding section notes that in the coming weeks the team will implement the network design in Cisco Packet Tracer to complete the project objectives.
3. 1. INTRODUCTION TO WALMART
An American public corporation that runs a chain of
large discount departmental stores and warehouses
World’s largest public corporation by revenue
Largest private employer in the world
Forth largest utility or commercial employer
World’s biggest retailer
4. 2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
After having consultations with the stake holders of Walmart, network
requirements they put forward to us are mentioned below:
Walmart opening up its new business to a new city Mississauga, Canada
The store initially will be having 4 different workspaces:
1. Retail Space
2. Office Space
3. Automotive Center
4. Outdoor Garden Center
Company wants to setup a wireless network (WLAN) which must be fast,
better, flexible, and intelligent
The network we will be designing for Walmart’s new store must ensure high
quality security as in todays world, security of customer’s data has become
truly essential and integral
5. 3. WEEK 1 & 2 DETAILS
This was the initial phase of the project i-e. the 1st & 2nd week in which the project was
initiated basically.
Meeting with the stake holders was held to discuss the details of the network
In the second task of Project Initiation phase, team roles were assigned to the
members participating in the project who will work on this project throughout. So,
this can be called as Project Team Formation task
Then comes the third task, in which project charter was created in which we defined
and wrote the scope of the project. This can be called Scope Statement phase of this
project
Then, the meetings and consultations with Walmart’s stake holder which took place in
order to gather their requirements and desires about the network that how the
network should be designed. So, we can call this phase of the project as Requirement
Gathering phase which essentially comes under Project Initiation phase
6. 3.1 WEEK 1 & 2 DELIVERABLES
Project team members names along with their roles in the project
were made clear and delivered
Project time sheet having the details about total hours invested /
week was submitted
Details of the requirements put forward by Walmart’s stake holders
were documented and delivered
7. 4. WEEK3 DETAILS
The project actually started from this week as we were asked to list
down all the technicalities related to this project. & the technicalities
are mentioned below:
The first task of this phase (Collect Project Documentation) was to
create a floor plan in order to get the clear picture that how much
area is present at the site/ store which our wireless network has to
cover. So, this task can be named as Validate Floor Plans
In the second task of this phase the details about the cabling and
wiring infrastructure were required
8. 4.1 WEEK3 DELIVERABLES
The floor plan designed using the
AutoCAD software was delivered
The details of the cabling & wiring and
infrastructural requirements were
documented and submitted
Coverage area of the network was
calculated and site survey was done
and on the basis of that, a report was
submitted to address these issues
9. 5. WEEK4 DETAILS
Week4 was basically in continuation of Week3 where we were asked to:
Suggest the suitable site survey to our client i-e Walmart that what
kind of site survey will be best for them. And this has to be based on
/ supported by some concrete evidence, facts & figures that why we
want them to pursue and continue with that site survey only
List the best practices of Wi-Fi being used in Retail or warehouses
Create the budget analysis of the network which will be having the
table in which the price of every single device (either intermediary
or end) which will be used in the network has to be mentioned to
calculate the budget of the entire project
Create a WBS that in how many milestones and tasks our project
will be completed
10. 5.1 WEEK4 DELIVERABLES
A WBS created on Ms. Project was
pasted in week4 report document
Detailed budget analysis section
was also a part of week4 report
which had the description, model
along with the price of every
single device that will be in our
network
SWOT analysis for Walmart was
also made a part of week4 report
11. 6. WEEK5 DETAILS
Week5 was entirely based on:
Selection of Access Points on the basis of following criteria that which
vendor’s APs we will be using in our project
1. Cisco, Meraki, Juniper, Aruba, Huawei, etc.
2. How many channels it will support?
3. Pattern of their antennas
4. Bands or frequency they will be working on (2.4 or 5 Hz)
Pestle analysis of Walmart that how political, economic, legal and other
macro-environment factors will affect the performance and existence of
Walmart store
Then, long-term and short-term goals were also required in week5 report
12. 6.1 WEEK5 DELIVERABLES
A detailed Pestle analysis considering
Walmart retail store was submitted in which
all the macro-environment factors or
external factors were discussed
comprehensively
Project’s long-term & short-term goals were
pointed out in detail in which the
technological strategy of Walmart was also
mentioned
13. 7. WEEK6 DETAILS
Week6 was the mid of the project in which we were asked to:
Explain different types of WLAN architectures like centralized, distributed,
hybrid, etc. and then it was also asked that what architecture we will be
using for our network design and deployment? And on the basis of which
factors, we will use that network architecture?
Secondly, we drew the network diagram according to our selected
architecture using the tool Ms. Visio. By using this network diagram, we
will design our entire network on Cisco Packet Tracer at the end of this
project
Then, it was also described that what basically means by data,
management and control plane? And in our network how the transmission
of data will take place
14. 7.1 WEEK6 DELIVERABLES
Detailed explanation of network architecture
and its type along with the reasoning of
selecting the distributed network architecture
for our network deployment was submitted
Comprehensive details about data, control, and
management plane along with the transmission
of data taking place in our network was also
provided
Network diagram drawn on Ms. Visio also
submitted
15. 8. CONCLUSION
So, This is it. This is the progress which has been made so far for
this project from week1 to week6 to design a network for
Walmart’s newly opened store in Mississauga, Canada.
Starting from requirement gathering, work breakdown
structure, setting long-term and short-term goals, creating floor
plan, determining coverage area, selecting cabling & wiring
structure, budgeting, all the way till network architecture.
In the coming weeks, we will be moving towards the practical
work of this project in order to achieve the objective.
