Sandra Shevey Nomination Ballot (1)
1. Biographies of Election Candidates 2015
Sandra Shevey
Introduction
I have vigorously campaigned about exploitation of writers since I first began writing over 45
years ago. My name is Sandra Shevey and I wish to stand as an ALCS Board Member. If
elected I intend to promote improved terms for writers including a more equitable
distribution of royalties. I also intend to campaign for the support of the large number of
writers not earning the minimum wage. Furthermore I intend to tackle the running costs of
ALCS. I maintain there is wasteful spending with regard to lobbying. I also object to wasteful
spending and allocation of grants to America and British charities, particularly when ALCS
members are not earning enough. We could all do with an extra £150-£200 pa in our
pockets. I also think ALCS should provide greater access to premises in as much as many
writers do not have an office and/or a quiet place to work.
Area(s) in which I write:
Investigative journalism – celebrity conspiracies; Travel-survival of local street markets/ local
economy
The skills and experience I have which match the current requirements of
the ALCS Board:
As a seminal film historian (gender and race) I have been high profile in working with the
Screen actors Guild and other organisations on improving roles/ portraits of women and
others. As a seminal theorist race/gender I testified before the California Commission on the
Status of Women in the Seventies. Since residing in Britain, I have lectured on Revisionist
Hollywood at the National Portrait Gallery, the Barbican Cinema and the Westminster
reference library. I also have been a BFI Associate Tutor (2006-2010). My revisionist
megastar sound archive has been listed (November 2015) as part of the British Library
Sound Archive Index.
My experience of sitting on Board(s) and/or Committee(s) and what I
believe I achieved during this time:
From 2006-2010 I was a BFI Associate Tutor. My film about saving London heritage street
markets was awarded by London Metropolitan Archives when released 2007. I have won
any number of UK awards for innovation (editorial and events) including the X-change British
Design Council Award and the 2014 UK Scoot Tourism Award.
2. I was Founding Member of the Women’s Film Educational Project in Hollywood in the
seventies (a forerunner Women in Film) and recruited on the board: Shirley Clarke, Irvin
Kershner, Dorothy Arzner, Ida Lupino and others.
Why I would like to be an ALCS Director:
Several members suggested I might stand after raising concerns at last year’s AGM about
expenditure. I was particularly concerned about the issue of grants to American and UK
needy when our own ALCS members are earning below the minimum wage.
The particular strengths I would bring to the ALCS Board:
Passion, a passionate belief that writers get a bad deal and that the status quo must be
changed whilst we still have a writers’ profession. Determination, commitment, an enquiring
mind and a refusal to be fobbed off are other qualities I would bring to the role.
