6. Everyone has a different perspective on what they see
and hear. With that being said, what we want team
members to have is a shared understanding of the work
and each other’s perspectives.
When we improve this understanding, it improves our
conversations and, thus, our effectiveness.
For teams, this means each team member gains a better
understanding of what is meant when we talk about the
work
7. Being an empath…..
in scrum teams???
•Understanding each other’s values allows us to create better working agreements.
•Understanding the rationale for how Product Owners make prioritization decisions helps team
members anticipate how to make their code more robust to handle likely changes.
•Managers understanding the perspective of their employee’s concerns helps the manager keep a high level of
engagement.
8. Ladder of Reference
• Starting at the bottom of the ladder, we have reality and
facts. From there, we…
• Experience these selectively based on our beliefs and
prior experience.
• Interpret what they mean.
• Apply our existing assumptions, sometimes without
considering them.
• Draw conclusions based on the interpreted facts and
our assumptions.
• Develop beliefs based on these conclusions.
• Take actions that seem "right" because they are based
on what we believe.
