This document provides information about pearl millet cultivation. It discusses the botanical details of pearl millet, its origin and distribution. It notes that India is the largest producer of pearl millet, with production of 8-9 million tons annually from an area of 9-10 million hectares. Ideal soil conditions and climate for pearl millet cultivation are described. Recommended varieties for different regions are listed, along with details on seed rate, spacing, sowing time, nutrient management, irrigation, pest and disease management, and expected yields.

9. Chemical control :
Pre-emergence application :
• It applied after sowing but before emergence of seedling.
• Atrazine 0.25 kg
• Pendimethalin if intercropped with pulses
Post-emergence application :
• In case of severe infestation.
• Low rates of 2,4-D (0.5-1.0 kg/ha) may be applied when
the plants are about 10 to 30 cm tall.
10. INTERCROPPING SYSTEM:
• In Tamil Nadu : Pearl millet + cowpea / sunflower

Important pests:
• shoot fly , stem borer , grass hopper .
Diseases:
• Ergot and Downy mildew
Disease management:
•Seed treated with Metalaxyl @ 6 g/kg to control downy mildew
