Thomas Edison’s bright ideas
The life and times of an inventor and businessman
Peter Loader @ TLT
An important Thursday
He noticed that Tom's forehead was unusually wide
and his head was bigger than normal. He made no
secret of his belief that Tom’s brains were scrambled!
Thomas Edison was born on
Thursday February the 11th, 1847 in
the town of Milan, America.
When Thomas was seven his
teacher finally lost his patience with
his constant questions.

What do you do when you get home
from school?

Edison’s first important invention was the
phonograph. A machine that could record
and reproduce sound.
But his greatest success was the development
of the electric light.
So when you turn on the light and listen to
music think of Thomas Edison.
I turn the lights on
and play Eminem!

Money and fame
As electricity spread around the world. The
success of his electric light brought Thomas
Edison to new heights of fame and wealth.
Edison's electric companies continued to
grow until in 1889 they were brought
together to form Edison General Electric.

Home sweet home
In 1884, during this period of success, Tom's wife
Mary died. A year later, while on holiday at a friends
house in New England, he met Mina Miller and they
fell in love.
The couple married in February 1886

The first movie star
While working on the phonograph,
Thomas began working on a device
that, "does for the eye what the
phonograph does for the ear", this was
to become motion pictures.
Thomas first demonstrated motion pictures in 1891,
and began making "movies" two years later.
“It is very beautiful over there.”
Thomas Edison died on Sunday October the 18th, 1931.
He was 84 years old.
Shortly before passing away, he awoke from a coma and
quietly whispered wife Mina, who had been keeping a vigil
all night by his side:  "It is very beautiful over there...“

Was Thomas Edison a genius?
This is what he had to say about it…..
"Genius is 1% inspiration and 99%
perspiration. A 'genius' is often
simply a talented person who has
done all of his or her homework.“

“TAKE RISKS IN YOUR LIFE
IF YOU WIN,YOU CAN LEAD
IF YOU LOOSE,YOU CAN
GUIDE”
Role of
Teachers in
imparting
Man-making
and
Nation-building
Education
Let me start with a
?? ??
• When a plant is
withering
• and
• dying
• is it better to water the
leaves or the roots?
• Life withers when truth is lost and
society decays when dharma is
lost.
• We have to enliven truth and
dharma through proper educational
and religious activities and
aspirations
Dharma sustains universe
and all that is in it.
• In scientific terms if Dharma
upholds the interconnectedness
• Interrelatedness
• and
• interdependence
• Dharma is responsible for an
individual’s Abhyudaya
• (achievement in individual material
life)
• and
• Nishreyas
• (establishment of awareness of
Truth in oneself)
Swami Vivekananda's
definition of Education:
• Education is
the manifestation of perfection
already in man
Swami Vivekananda's
concept of Education
• “Education is not the amount of
information that is put into your
brain and runs riot
• there undigested all your life. We
must have life-building, man-
making, character making
assimilation of ideals. We want
education by which character is
formed, strength of mind is
increased, the intellect is
expanded, by which one can
stand on one’s feet.
• What we want is Western science
coupled with Vedanta,
Brahmacharya as the guiding motto
and also Shraddha and
• faith in one’s own life”.
1.INDIVIDUAL
Build up our individual potentialities
and talents to the best extent by
incorporating time tested spiritual
values satya and dharma in our lives.
Our sashtras give all guidance in this
connection (yoga, meditation etc,)
2.NATIONAL
• Learn to link our life harmoniously
with our nation’s values and
traditions. For teachers involved in
• Man-making & Nation building
programmes patriotism must have
this deeper and fuller meaning, that
3.UNIVERSAL
• when our identification with the
truth reaches its zenith there is
an expansion of personality
touching on the divine that is
when small man grows into
universal being a Zagat guru,
a viswatma.
