March to December 2014 – Yangon, Myanmar – English Language Teacher
Teaching General English at a private college in Yangon, Nelson English Language Centre
(NELC). I was teaching the higher level English classes, and my students were young adults.
Teaching Business English in private classes to professional people, including executives of
Myanmar Central Bank.
One-to-one IELTS tutoring for high school students.
My CELTA training was undertaken at Navitas College in Sydney in 2012 (graduated January 2013),
and during that training I taught general English to young adult students. I also undertook volunteer
tutoring in English for Mission Australia through 2013.
The variety of my teaching work in Myanmar provided me with a broad exposure to students of all
ages, backgrounds and abilities. Lessons and teaching material sometimes had to be adapted to suit
the needs and context of the learners. My current work at Holmes Institute is consolidating and
developing my English language teaching skills, within the Australian context.
Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked extensively in financial markets, in Australia and the UK.
My roles included private banker, fund manager, client adviser and research analyst. In Australia, I
was employed by Macquarie Bank and Ord Minnett Ltd, and in the UK I was with Barclays Bank for
seven years in various divisions. I was an Associate Director of Barclays Private Banking.
In these roles I was accustomed to dealing with people at all levels and advising on a broad range of
financial matters, for individuals, superannuation funds and institutions, including charities.
2. AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I have strong written and verbal communication skills. I am accustomed to communicating complex
ideas and strategies in a financial context, and also in relation to English language teaching. I have
considerable experience communicating ideas through presentations, and adapting material and
styles to meet the needs of the learner.
I am able to establish a good level of rapport with students of all ages and backgrounds, within the
context of a teaching environment.
My work in Myanmar provided exposure to a wide variety of teaching experiences, and I am building
on that experience in my current position at Holmes Institute.
My objective is to draw on my past experiences in the financial world, and combine these with my
teaching experiences to teach in the Business English field. I believe that my depth of experience in
business and finance, and my enthusiasm for teaching, provide a strong background in this area.
