2. Batteries:-Series of electro chemical cells
There are two types of batteries:
1.Primary battery
2.Secondary battery
1.Primary battery:-
This battery is non rechargable that means if the battery charge is
finished it cannot be charged again. This can only used for once.
3. Secondary battery:-This battery can be
recharged that means once the battery
charge is finished this can be charged
again.
Lithium cells:-
โ Lithium cells belong to primary cells.
โ The cells having Lithium anodes are called
Lithium cells.
4. These are of two types :-
1.Lithium cells with solid cathodes
2.Lithium cells with liquid cathodes
1.Lithium cells with solid cathodes:-
Anode:-Lithium metal
Cathode:-MnO2
5. Electrolyte:-Polymer(propylene carbonate&dimethyoxy ethane)
In this battery lithium is used as anode, which a specially
prepared heat treated MnO2 is used as the cathode electrolyte is
Lithium salts in mixed organic solvent propylene carbonate
&dimethoxy ethane.
The cathode MnO2 should be heated to remove water before
incorporating it in the cathode it is used to improve the
efficiency of the cell.
8. Lithium cells with liquid cathode:-
Anode:-Lithium metal
Cathode:-Carbon
Electrolyte:-Thionyl chloride(SOCl2)
9. Thionyl chlorine acts as electrolyte &as a
cathode .The cell contain Lithium as anode &A
porous carbon material serves as a cathode
current collection which recieves election from
the external circuit.

11. Applications:-
1. They are used in millitary &space applications
2. In medical devices such as drug delivery systems.
3. It is also used in electronic circuit boards for supplying
voltage for memory protection and stand by functions.
