Wide Area Network (WAN) allow companies to extend their network over a large geographical area, but when companies try to expand their network to even larger area and not to forget across multiple carriers’ networks, they face major operational challenges. Software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) overcomes these networking challenges, by separating networking hardware from its control mechanism. Gartner, predicts that up to 25% of users will manage their WAN through software within two years. Revenue from SD-WAN vendors is growing at 59% annually, Gartner estimates, and it’s expected to become a $1.3 billion market by 2020.
This eBook from Calsoft talks about SD-WAN trends and analysis. It also describe its benefits, key players, market landscape, and some really interesting statistics and forecast.

1. SD-WAN: AN OVERVIEW
The software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) is a specific application of software-defined
networking (SDN) technology applied to WAN connections, which are used to connect
enterprise networks – including branch offices and data centers – over large geographic
distances.
A WAN might be used, for example, to connect branch offices to a central corporate network,
or to connect data centers separated by distance. In the past, these WAN connections often
used technology that required special proprietary hardware. The SD-WAN movement seeks to
move more of the network control is moved into the “cloud,” using a software approach.

Current WAN architecture has few challenges like
Traditional connectivity with costly MPLS causing inefficiency of using diverse
applications.
Lack of network security and reliability features
Lack of optimization of SaaS and cloud based services within network
Lack of automated provisioning of resources
