THE GERMAN PERIOD:
• Germans control of the central and southern parts of the territory that is now Namibia
• Germans used to gain control was to exchange land for `protection‘
• The German Colonial Administration was never fully in control of Namibia
• Germany surrendered the administration of Namibia to the South African Prime Minister Louis Botha
THE APARTHEID PERIOD:
• In 1948 the Afrikaner led National Party gained power in South Africa
• Immorality Act
• Apartheid simply means 'living separately‘
• Most `colored' Namibians in Windhoek where settled in 'Khomasdal', five kilometers outside of
Windhoek, and the black population divided from 'Khomasdal' by a five hundred meter `buffer zone' in
what is known as 'Katatura'

5. GEOGRAPHY OVERVIEW
CLIMATE:
Namibia is located on the southern margin of the tropics and has distinct seasons.
The coast is cooled by the Benguela Current and averages less than 2 inches of rainfall annually.
The Central Plateau and the Kalahari have wide diurnal temperature ranges, more than 50 °F (30 °C) on
summer days and less than 20 °F (10 °C) in winter.
Humidity is normally low, and rainfall increases from about 10 inches on the southern and western parts
of the plateau to about 20 inches in the north-central part and more than 24 inches on the Caprivi
Strip and Otavi Mountains.

FLORA AND FAUNA:
• Animals live in the National Parks, like Etosha, Khaudum, Mudumu, Mamili and Hardan Dam. And also in “the wild”
there are animals, such as(desert) elephants, rhino’s, lions, giraffes, zebra’s, antelopes, hyena’s, cheetah’s and
leopards.
• More than 600 bird’s species exist in Namibia, in many different colors and shapes, but also a lot of smaller mammals,
insects and reptiles can be found.
• There are also many different kinds of plants and flowers, from the special quiver trees to huge cactuses and palm
trees.
• At the coast whales, dolphins, seals and sharks can be spotted.
